Hi, so my parents got my brother ducks and chickens for his birthday may last year and they never got vaccinated. They stay together in the coup at night and free range in our yard during the day. About 3 weeks ago I noticed that one of the hen sounded differently than the other (like when you catch a cold and your voice sounds different than usual) and I got worried and told my parents. They went to take a look and said that she seems fine. But I was worried so started giving them oregano and cinnamon in their food/water. A week pass and another hen started sound like her and I notice that she were breath quiet heavy but they were eating and laying just fine. I haven’t notice anything different in the ducks yet. I started giving them garlic last week in their water:food but this morning my dad noticed that one of the girl’s eye is glued shut. Now I’m panicking because I think they might have coryza or something worse from what I read. I mainly take care of them since I’m home the most so I’m quite attach to them ( even though I’m terrified of touching them from my childhood trauma of being pecked by one). What should I do?? Please help!!

Chickens can have respiratory infections that aren't coryza. Can you go into more detail on the symptoms? Do they have a wheezing or rattley breath? are they making "sneezing" sounds? Are they open mouth breathing? Any moisture bubbles coming from their nose or eyes?

When I first started keeping chickens, I didn't have very dry bedding nor great ventilation, and a few hens developed bacterial respiratory infections. In my case I learned the infection was bacterial because antibiotics happened to work. Symptoms went away after just two days of a week-long treatment! Since both viral and bacterial infections can present in the same way, I recommend antibiotics if possible. If you're not able to get antibiotics from a vet, look into your coop management.

Is there a strong ammonia/urine smell? Is the bedding damp or moldy? Do you keep water in the coop? Is there any ventilation in the coop? All of those things can lead to respiratory infections.

Hi so I notice that the noice the they are making is similar to wheezing but not as bad. I went to check on the hen that had her left eye covered in mucus this morning and it seems that her eye is swollen a little but no mucus! The other sounds normal when they make noises besides the two hens. Sorry I can’t tell you exactly since I’m not rly sure besides them sounding different from the rest when they are bawking. I have not notice a strong smell in their coop and we keep their food inside where they sleep and water outside their coop. We do have holes cut out for ventilation and leave their coop door open during the day and change their hay every 3 weeks.

Some of my chicken sound like that, they all make different bawk noises. So, they’ve been drinking good amounts of water, right? And their ventilation is good and they have clean bedding?
I believe they have been eating and drinking well and I plan on giving them new bedding today. I also noticed that the hen from yesterday with a swollen eye has discharges coming out of her nose but no mucus is her eye just swollen a little. My dad says he will call the vet and see what is wrong with them!

Yes, you could take them to the vet. It honestly sounds like a respiratory problem with discharges coming out her nose and eyes and a wheezing type voice. Where are you located? location is helpful. Hope your chickens feel better
