My dog has a Bot Fly!! *Pics page 3*

awww poor baby!! when i was a kid we had an indoor outdoor cat who got one in the middle of her forehead. we had never heard of them before and had no idea what it was untill it was large enough to see clearly. my mom being raised on a farm with little money growing up just guessed at what to do (this was before internet) so we doused that thing in rubbing alchol every single day poor kitty i felt so sorry for her you could tell it was painful but i was only 7 at the time. it was a few days before we quite seeing movement so then my mom sterilized some tweezers and dug the grub thing out and we continued with the rubbing alchol untill the wound closed up and healed. of coarse now i would NOT reccomend doing that as im sure the alchol hurt like an SOB my poor kitty

Back in the day it was recommended to pour kerosene or turpentine on/in the area, so rubbing alcohol doesn't seem so bad!

We also were told to put vaseline or Vicks over the hole so the worm would smother...this never worked as the cat usually rubbed or licked it off.

The last one we did, I squoze the worm to the surface and Mom poked it's head with a pin...and the juices popped out and splattered her in the face!

My mother is such a good woman!!!! Not many would have suffered through all that...

We'd occassionally get them on US when I was in Panama for jungle warfare training. Gross? Yeah. Hours of entertainment tho.

Cover the hole with either nailpolish or vaseline. Suffocates the grub, then you can remove it and use it as fishbait, feed.to your chickens or whatever.

It is really small still and I am worried I wouldn't be able to grab it and pull it out. So we will wait a few days. It is kinda interesting, though, tonight when hubby came home I showed it to him and the worm put on quite a show of popping out of the hole. I should have had tweezers handy but then again i didn't want to play tug-o-war and end up popping it.

I lost a rabbit to bot flies before!! Poor baby had them crawling out of his eyes! I rushed him to the vet and they cleaned him up pumped him with steroids and sent me home with him and medication, he died and hr later! I was sooo mad because I brought him there the be putdown! They said oh no we can fix him up! 330 dollars later and my bunny had to suffer longer than needed. Hope your doggie feels better soon!

We found a new vet needless to say! I don't believe in prolonging the suffering of an animal for personal and monetary reasons.

I had Zeke on my lap and was watching this thing's head poke in and out...*shudder* and I wanted to show hubby how the fluid comes out and I just happened to squeeze it just at the right time to trap it near the surface. I gave just a little more of a squeeze and it popped right out. Like the most disgusting zit ever. I was worried he'd have more in there but seems he's doing a lot better today, he's stopped licking the area. I cleaned it really well and now its just time to heal. Thanks for all the suggestions and support. I have pics of it but I will upload them later.
