OP,

My neighbor told me this story about his mother ...

She was a city kid and moved with her new husband to the country. They decided to get chickens for a little extra money and to feed children when they came along. Newlyweds.
They got their chickens and housed them in an existing coop. The chickens got to be about 8 weeks old and had all their feathers, so she kept talking about how there were gonna lay any day now. To EVERYONE in this farming town. One day they did start to lay...about 10 weeks old...remarkable chickens, early maturerers, for sure. But more remarkable than laying at 10 weeks was the WAY they laid. EVERY DAY the chickens laid ONE DOZEN eggs, in the same nest, in a perfect pryamid...for a week she bragged about how her chicken laid a dozen eggs every day. Perfectly stacked. She told everyone about it. Of course they snickered. Or looked at her like she had 2 heads. Or just said "of course dear". After 2 weeks she started to wonder about her eggs and their stack. She did some research and found out that chickens don't lay eggs at the age her chickens were. So now she is embarrassed and starts to ask her neighbor about the eggs. He admits that he had been pranking her and was glad she FINALLY figured it out, cuz buying a dozen eggs every day was breaking him.

The family still laughs about the 10 week old egg layers that mom had....even she laughs...but it's been 45 years....

My point? If someone can believe that their chickens laid eggs perfectly stacked in the nest every day for 2 weeks....well...pranks happen ....to the best of us...

I vote with those who say revenge is called for. These are your babies and they are messing with your peace of mind with their prank. Chicken rabies

I have 2 nest boxes inside the coop with a wooden egg in each. I would assume they would lay in those. BUT, they sleep in the nest boxes. Would that ever deter them from laying where they sleep? and the first one was inside the coop, but not in the box. Don't think I believe these were laid by them, I'm just not sure how it works when they sleep where they should lay.

My BA lays eggs that are reddish, almost newsprint like. Don't discount an occasional egg outside the nest box though. I have golf balls in mine and before they started laying one of them would get cheeky and roll it out and bury it in the bedding. I found one egg one day in the bedding, but what probably happened was nest box congestion and it just had to come out.

I have two nests for 3.25 birds (1 chukar) and observe their behavior DAILY via webcam while I work. Most of the time there is plenty of space available. Sometimes there is slight congestion where they are waiting for an opening or a certain nest to become available. It's so funny because you know they're cooking up an egg by the way they just stand there, watching. One day I watched all birds double occupancy... some lay faster than others... some just will not take this kind of invasion of personal space and will reschedule at a later time even though they were there first. At first I thought there was a favorite nest, but it seems to have more to do with which way the wind blows.

Yes, definitely make sure your roosts are higher, and if they are, is it enclosed/dark enough?

Yes, the occasional first egg can be in weird places. I've had first eggs under the feeder, under the roost, but most of the time there is evidence of nest making of some sort. I did have 1 egg dropped in the run. The pullet was racing back to the coop, and well, she wasn't fast enough.

But combined with all the other information, this is still a prank.

Just wanted to let you know that my husband totally pranked me when my chickens first started laying! He bought a goose egg and put it in the nest box. I totally freaked out because it was so big!!! The thing is, I have four bantams, if one of them had laid it they would have been dead! The other four full size chickens I had were brown egg layers!!! There was no way they could have laid it, but I totally fell for it!!

The only thing is, my husband couldn't keep his laughter back, so I knew right away it was him! But not before running around screaming about it and then taking a picture to post on BYC!!! He totally got me and has not let me live it down to this day!! Please don't feel bad and please let us know when the prankster is found!

Oh, yeah. And then tell him that when the "tests" come back, you find out that what is causing this to happen can also cause impotence in men.

That would perk up any newly wed man!

I say you should just heartily enjoy the boiled egg. (if you don't trust the prank one to be edible, boil your own) Make a big show every morning about how you just love that your chickens lay hard boiled eggs that you can just peel and eat. Talk about how you can't wait for the other girls to start laying and hope that they will lay hard boiled eggs too. If hubby wants to keep up the "offended" routine that he is not pranking you, then he is going to have to pony up several dozen more hard-boiled eggs.. which will get expensive and time consuming.

Hope hubby is making coffee for you to go with your pre-cooked breakfast! Love this thread and can't wait to find out how you are going to get him back.
