SPEAKING about 'who sits where ...'

So lots has happened and I apologize for the delay in story-telling here, but my brain was sectioned off into 28 separate grade-four compartments, rigorously worked out until last Friday and now it's somewhat whole again for the summer. There's so much to fill in ~ hard to know where to start.

But ~

The other night sh*t went down lemme tell you when the young lady chicks decided they were big enough to roost.

I don't really know what the magic *time* is when a chick decides that face planting the bedding is not a sufficient sleeping arrangement, and that now is the day to join the others, on a roost bar ... but ... apparently the other day was THE day...

SSoooo I went to tuck everyone in and be subjected to their ungrateful comments as usual, when OHH EMM GEEE the teeny-peepers were on THE roost. like not 'A' roost (and there are many) THE roost. They were all like dressed up with fake I.D., stuffed bras, and all inconspicuous, like "Peeebeeeebeeep do you think they can tell? peeeeepepepepeeb".

Roopenn was in the middle, with Rue beside him on the right and then Lindsay on the far right. The teeny-peepers were on the left, all pressed up beside each other with a generous space between their obnoxious crime and Roopenn.

I'm like 'Oh WOW girls way to go!' until I saw Rue's neck grow four feet.

So she was going to kill them and something had to be done.

Anyways I know Roopenn listens to me because he always does what I tell him to ~ several times a day in fact. So, I shook my finger at him, "Rooppenn! do NOT let her harm the chicks!"

He had a lot 'goin on there. He was all like, "Hey good-going, girls. come join the partAAAy!" buuut ... then he had the Dragon-Queen-Hell-Hen beside him who was now towering over top like a cobra ready to strike any second "WHaaaaaaaAAAAATHhheeeebBBBgaaaawWWWWWK??...

Just a lil'stressed, Roopenn looked at me and my finger, then at the chicks, then at Rue, then at me again, in which case I shook my finger at him again ...

I actually didn't think he had it in him ... TBH ... He recoiled backward, and positively Pecked-Rue-into-her-sitting-spot! peck peck peck! Just like that!

I would just like to say, straight out, that I am nowhere NEAR able to recreate, in verse, the look of "rage-humility-confusion-AYFKM?-didthisreallyjusthappen-Idon'thinkyouknowwhoyoouraretalking ..." on Rue's face ...

And then he PECKED HER AGAIN! just to make sure.

I actually had to look away, out of respect. Actually I was laughing.

But Anyways, Rue was all, "I'm never coming out of the chicken coup agaaaaaaaaaiiiIIINNNN!" for a while but she's back to herself. One word ...'Peanuts"

So ... here are the new girls ... Lucy and Lu
They are growing into their feathers quite nicely.

Bye for now!

Ah, the well placed peck or two from Roopenn kept the peace. There are advantages to having a rooster around, especially a rooster like Roopenn who listens to his person and uses the peck in moderation.

So, Lucy and Lu are the only newbies? They are cute.

I'll keep checking in for any stories of Roopenn and his hens that you want to share. Oooh and if you have a chance to post a recent photo of Roopenn, that would be good, too.

I have four new newbies as well ... but still in the brooder. They are Australorps And Roopenn has some children hatchin as well. But more on that later ...

No ... they are not Australorps. Don't know what I was thinking. I don't even know what they are ...Ameraucanas I think.

Aaaanyways, the thing is we have a problem here.

See, ever since Philip my drake was hit by a car in the spring this year ...

Well ... he's kinda ... protective., y'know? Like maybe... outa-the-blue-some-2000-pound-hunk-of-steel-projectile-will-smash-into you-so-you-never-can-be too-careful ... kinda thing.

... he's been feeling really protective about everything/everyone all the time. Like he's obsessed with doting on his ducks. I'm pretty sure he's been keeping track of how many eggs they've laid and that he's thinking all three thousand of them are going to hatch any second now, and he has no idea where they are. He's constantly checking here and there and doting doting doting ... maybe even worse they've all hatched and their running in all directions getting smashed by cars.

Who knows what he's thinking.

Today he doted on Lindsay (like as in Roopenn's sweetie), " kwakwakwaaa is is is that a bug? A bug on your back ... here let me ..."

"AYFKMRN?"

Problem ... I am pretty sure Philip was not supposed to debug Roopenn's hen.

Anyways, I've never actually seen a rooster do a double take until that moment, but what's great is I think I captured it on film! Here we are. This is the situation here. Roopenn was sussing out the jeep as a potential get away vehicle while the rest of the flock examined the future prison walls for flaws. Lindsay was picking her way to help with the fence detail looking lovely as usual ...

Then it just happened so fast ...
Philip fondled her feathers and then ...

So there's Roopenn in his " ... did he just do what I think he did?" moment. Luckily I intervened while he was still talking to himself and diffused the matter.

Phiew!

Anyways, so I'm still waitng for the fencing to arrange itself around the property. Not sure how long that takes. Every day I wake up and it's still laying there in the grass.

Might have to google that one...

Bye for now.

Poor hyper vigilant Philip... Fortunately Roopenn thinks before reacting.

That's a great closeup photo of Roopenn. He looks like a brooding monarch with those heavy feather brows sticking out under his comb crown. "To peck or not to peck. That is the question."
