My Flock Journey

Update on Hazel:
Hazel is almost 3 months old! Wow has it just flown by or what?

Question:
Will she know where to lay?
Or should I put a fake egg in her nesting box?
If yes, at what age should I be doing this?

Time really does fly!
As for your questions, if it's dark and nicely sheltered she should lay there BUT she will lay wherever she is most comfortable and we can't unfortunately control where they lay. It's really your choice whether you put a fake egg in or not. If you do chose to put the fake egg in the nest, put it in when her combs grows abit and becomes a bright red. This is how I tell if a pullet is going into lay.

I think she will lay in the nesting boxes but im also worried that she may lay under the house.
Thank you for your advice.

Krystal, my girls have all chosen their own place to lay... fake eggs and moving their eggs to the nest boxes has worked for me. for the most part... Still got some hard heads who insist on "their nest" aka the feed bag in the barn.

I know you consider Hazel an “australourp” but she looks like my red stars... anyways two of them (Maddie & Opal) started laying at 3 3/4 months old... NOT TOO MUCH LONGER :woot
:) ;) :D

Ill be excited to see where she lays. I just hope its not under the house but or I wont be able to get them out.
