...but the fact remains there's still a lot of cold, short, dark days beyond it. Sigh.

Usually hens that are hatched around March, April, and May don't start laying until the next spring.

My speckled Sussex BO and welsummer all hatched in April and have been laying since late august/early september..maybe I got lucky?

I have to dig out too, but path to coop is only about 40 feet of shoveling.

They are on layer pellets and I have oyster shell available to them in the run

Layer feed can actually slow down development. The high calcium content can be harmful to birds that aren't laying and developing pullets need a feed with a higher protein content.
