Sounds like mean owners to me. Normally a dog would be pleased to see its owner. It obviously did know that it was about to be punished, and appropriate dog punishment shouldn't make it cower and whine. Poor dog. Not your fault Jerseygirl, no way for you to know what kind of owners it had.

Not necessarily mean owners ... my dogs know when they have done something wrong or think they are in trouble. You'd think I beat them to death several times a day.

I've never hit my dog- but he yelps if he thinks you're going to step on him. And he slithers off the couch when I catch him by surprise.

Poor pup- hope he's alright.

Ack! Don't say that! The owner may not be abusive, it could just be the dog's nature!

We have a rat terrier and he cowers and whimpers whenever you call him to come home IN FRONT OF PEOPLE!

He puts up this "I get beaten" show LOL
But we've never put a hand on him (once in a blue, he runs in front of our feet in the dark or we accidently step on him!).

He is considered a submissive dog though! Will roll on his back and pee all over!
He's getting better with positive reinforcement! But still rolls on his back and puts the "beaten" show LOL
Oi makes me feel terrible, but he's not being treated badly at all!
