There is no chance of that in that small pen in this climate. I am happy if I get any kind of shrub to survive at all with he birds in there. :)
I have a few different bamboos to try, I hope some will make it.

So far they have killed every single hosta and grass I have put in there, but hopefully with larger space the plants will have a chance. For now they have violets and a bay tree.

Runner bamboo will not only take over a pen, it will also take over areas outside of the pen! Pheasants tend not to forage on bamboo.
