My neighbor kidnapped and abused my chickens-seriously

We hear you and encourage you to stand up to a bully, but let's help you find a way that keeps you as safe as possible.

And I'm with those who see no point in picking on the wife of the bully. Just won't be helpful. Might make you look foolish in the community.

People amaze me-we live on over 5 acres with a creek which makes it attractive for people to TRESPASS!!!! Anyway, God has a great way of giving me an inkling to step outside every once and a while to check things out. I go outside (this was when my chickies free ranged without my supervision) and I see a boy with a stick near my flock. I hollered (in my sweetest voice) and said "excuse me can I help you?" My husband made me tone down the "GET OFF MY PROPERTY NOW YOU ARE TRESPASSING!"

Anyway, he didn't hear me and as I got closer I see him with a stick poking at one of my roosters.

When he saw me and stopped I asked him what he was doing and did he know this was private property. He pointed to his dad who was down near the creek and said "Oh we are looking for deer" Then he ran to his dad. Dad didn't say anything just walked on. GEEZ!

Amazing that;
1. a parent just lets their child go off and mess with someone else's animals. Lord knows if he had been attacked I would be facing the lawsuit for having a "Killer rooster" on the loose!
2. That people have no respect for other peoples property.
3. That parents don't teach their children good manners and respect for other people and other creatures!

Your neighbor sounds a bit off. I know a few people that need to be institutionalized, just glad they moved away. The rest I stay away from.
But I agree with Robo, I am very gentle with my chickens - the layers and the meat birds. I try to calm them before I do the deed and I even offer them a beer. I hang them from the tree after processing to let them air chill.
I'd rather do that than eating chicken from McD.... and KFC blind to how they were raised and met their demise.

I do think that someone who behaves atrociously toward animals is also someone who is very likely abusive in some way to people, perhaps even to his or her own spouse and children. I give them a wide berth. If anyone did anything inhumane to my animals, I'd do whatever was in my legal power to make sure that person was punished, even if it is just a fine. They should be let off the hook.

Hunting serves a purpose, just as raising domestic animals for food does. A person who is humane applies compassion to both hunted animals and his domestic ones. This means a clean kill with minimal trauma to the creature, and respectful treatment of the carcass (including not wasting any of the usable parts). After all, a life was given so that we can eat, and otherwise benefit from that life.

Dunno how we can expect parents to teach their kids respect and good manners if they don't have 'em themselves. The man looking for deer at your creek clearly didn't.

Maybe next time, you could fire a shotgun into the air before asking (in your sweetest voice) "excuse me can I help you?"

And, I'd be posting "No Trespassing" signs all along the boundaries of the property so folks are duly warned. It also gives the property owner some protection against liability law suits if someone is injured while on your property (as if they don't know they're trespassing!).

Femme, I dunno, I am a very suspicious person yet I read your story and never once thought it was fake. I am still trying to figure out why anyone did. A few hours a day off and on, are spent at this site and I've read some incredible stories but only 2 or 3 times have I ever thought it was a "made up job." I'm sorry you got jumped by some - it's unfortunate that some rush to judgement. They also seem to be the ones that reply quickest. I wanted to reply at once but knew it wouldn't appear till the end of this threat.

You aren't the only one who has been victimized by neighbor. We suffered badly from it and finally left a home we loved 41 years ago to move here.

I hope this perp gets everything he deserves .

Someone acting like that is past the point of being an ass... they are dangerous.

Raising chickens to me is a sign i preparedness which I respect. Contacting the authorities is the next step. However... If i had a crazy violent person next to me I would make sure my family was protected from the type of person you encountered.

I am not advocating shooting someone over a dead chicken but I would view his actions as a threat and I would continue to prepare. just my two cents worth.
