My neighbors are mad about my chickens - but we are LEGAL

Adverse position (acquiring property ownership by squatting) IS legal in all 50 states, so check your state's requirements to see exactly what is required from a time standpoint to claim ownership. Wikipedia has useful information. I believe from what I have read that California has the fewest number of years, about 5, with 20 being about the most. Note that you can circumvent the claim by giving permission to the squatter to use your land. I personally feel that if you are okay with allowing them to use the land that you should send them a certified letter with a signature required to document that you have given permission. Otherwise you could lose your land to a simple court filing. Your alternative is to forceably forbid their use of your land, or simply draw up the documents to transfer title.

Same in MO....be careful and take that parcel back! NOW! Fence it off if you have to but don't let them just have it, what do they call it squaters rights? You can do it nicely but take control back!

Lots of funny ideas in this post--certainly cheered me up!

yep she is right, here it is called encroachment. And I should know as I have my fence a few extra feet father back in the buffer woods area between my home and my neighbors home. Now they haven't said anything but I am aware that after 7 years that land becomes mine. Again it is completely unusable land for them, and I did not do it intentionally the fence people put it 4 feet farther back than where I said to, but once done I was not about to remove it without the owners asking. 3 more years left and those few feet become mine. Now would I push the issue if they asked. Of course not but if no one says anything about it I wont either

Maybe you should get a donkey too!

Or you could put a light and timer(TV too, so they can Watch Late Night with Conan Obrien) in the coop so the chickens can learn to keep city folk hours

As for adverse possession, if the encroachment is with permission, it doesn't
count. But permission should be in writing.

Sounds like you should plant something that grows up to jungle in that space.
