My sad mistake...

dont fuss we all make mistakes ... my last one was putting 5 newly hatched in a 5 litre black bucket to keep them seperated from the older ones that were trying out their new wings and being very rough ... i placed the open bucket into the brooder not too far from the heat lamp so i knew that they'd be getting enough heat ... turns out thats a big NO NO ... when i checked on them 2 hrs later ... they were all dead ... i think they got fried !
I'm so sorry about your chicks! I know, it's all learning, but it's hard when they have to pay the price for our mistakes...

Maybe you could figure a way to install a vent cover in the window. That way, it could remain open for ventilation, but would not get much water from the rain.

Unfortunately I live in a high wind area so those vents don't work here, I know because someone installed one under my bedroom window that I had to seal off completely. It was like having an open hole in the wall complete with water damage. I was thinking about something like those greenhouse vent openers that are triggered by temperature (not perfect) but probably most of the windy rain storms when it's cooler...

I've got to search BYC to check if anyone here uses them. I love BYC, what would I do without your help?

well if you know anything about arduino you could install a temp and humidity sensor ... relatively cheap and easy to do ...

I wish I did, I'm a luddite and I used to be much better at learning new things when I was young and not chronically ill... but there are a lot of things I could do with arduino. I might just have to finally get into it.

So sorry for your loss. I've been to NM, the winds there do get pretty horrendous.
I hope you get to a Dr for a follow up, the reaction you had doesn't sound right. My Parents & Hubby take/took the pneumonia shot & never ever got a reaction like you had. Take care

I can't sleep and am browsing the forums late at night and found your thread.

Years ago I was bitten by a black widow spider and was completely incapacitated for a week, and sick for a while longer still. I had to crawl to feed my cats, but at night I don't think I had the strength to close the cat door and worried all week about them. They all knew to come inside and survived, thank goodness. But they were very vulnerable, and the stress of worrying for them but being so incredibly sick probably slowed my recovery.

And I lost a young hen last month. I can't say for sure, but my intuition tells me she reacted poorly to the freshly stained exterior walls of the coop. It was super hot, so I left the windows uncovered (just hardware cloth), which exposed the flock to the stain.

The stain is Hemp Shield. It's non-toxic and safe, but it does have an odor, and as someone who is chemically sensitive I would probably find it difficult sleeping near it during the first full day of it having been freshly applied. No time to cure yet.

Dune Buggy woke up the next morning with open beak breathing and gasping, which worsened, and I fear my lack experience in treating her may have led to her death. I still can't believe she's gone.

So in my own way I can relate to what it feels like to be responsible for the death of a dear animal friend.

I do hope you're feeling better, and I hope you find a doctor who respects you and treats you well and makes you feel welcome and appreciated.

you can pick up everything on ebay ..uno5 board about $5 for a sensor $1 a stepper motor with a driver $ 4 ... try its ..its actually much more fun than you'll imagine ... its also programmable so you can establish at what temp to open .. how far you want it open and if it detects water ..closes automatically ... have fun!!
