My silkies ate a good bit of SAGO!

I walked outside to see my silkies devouring my sago palm. What can I do for them if anything?! Anyone have this happen before?!

Sago palms are actually in the cycad family (dates back to the dinosaur eras)so guess eating the fronds would be more like eating really tough ferns. I don't know if the fern family is bad for chickens? The seeds on the female plants are poisonous to dogs but pretty big so don't think a chicken would try to eat those.

Palm is technically a big herb. They should be fine. Mine devoured my banana tree had to put up a net around it. Little dinosaurs are getting back to their roots.

From what I’ve read it’s not a true palm. It’s incredibly toxic to all animals. I know dogs and cats die from eating little of it. My girls ate a good bit. Never touched it before today.

Yes it is toxic to people, cats, dogs and birds.
The nuts are more toxic than the leaves.
The only treatment I am aware of is to give them activated charcoal - which is good for all kinds of poisoning.
Give activated charcoal orally and give it as soon after poisoning as you possibly can.
Good luck - hope it goes OK. Activated charcoal should be available at a pharmacy.
