Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Nice pullet, with great black color. In second picture she seems to be broad in type? I like this for meat/production breeding or just for good heavy type. if that's a buff pullet behind her, she looks promising also.

Remind me of her chick down color and pattern?

The partridge had black down - upon close inspection, with white accents on face and wing joint early on (first week). Now that I think back, I think all the black downed chicks that DIDN't turn out solid black had white accents on the front wing joint very young, some with white face accents (though not as obvious as this one).

The body type is really great on these Ideal NNs. The little black pullet is the smallest one, but the shape is good to my (admittedly inexperienced) eye, and they all feel like big bricks when I pick them up. Very happy with them. I DO wish I could get hold of some S&G Naked Necks to add to my flock. But I checked - the minimum order is now 100 CHICKS!!!! OMG!!!!!

Crossposting from the Breeding for Production thread, here are their growth curves. Tank continues to outpace everyone - interestingly, I can't pick him out by eye anymore, even though he is so much heavier (he's one of several reds). There are some boys that are hitting a late growth spurt - I'm curious to see if they catch up to him.

Hmm, she may be a pencilled variant.. more akin to pencilling on hamburgs etc than to 'true' partridge as on rocks. I will say this is all rather obscure genetics though(birchen plus Db/Pg vs eb plus Pg). Basically it's down to her feather pattern showing more of a barred than a chevron type.. but maybe she will show changes at full maturity. Shes pretty in a subtler way.

She's the smallest, wow that's nice... I like the broad shoulders that continue down the back more or less parallel to the tail but at the same time, check it is not an illusion created by fluffy thigh/butt feathers. I usually find those to be good productive birds for a dual purpose or staying away from an overly layer type body(basically, skinny). I also like to feel their bodies to see where most of their weight is.

Yeah I am also regretting not getting some SG stock back when they had 25/50 chick orders available... sigh. I wonder why comments/personal experience with SG stock doesn't seem to show up on byc very much? Probably their minimum orders, haha The one review of their NN and rainbows I saw on here were glowing... cannot find it anymore. their NN absolutely towered over the one hatchery stock NN of similar age.

I love your reports and charts! I've never done it, great idea but no patience for it and admittedly just go by eye and feel.

Helpful info and tips! Thanks! Yeah, they really all feel like bricks...

I know this sounds crazy, but I actually even considered driving to pick up the chicks from S&G if I could talk them into giving me fewer, like 25. (It's 12 hours one way from here.) I think I even emailed them to ask. One day maybe I will...

Puppy is the closet to the front on the roost. Note the abnormal New Hampshire pullet on the lower roost - interestingly, whatever her genetic deformity, it comes with some white mottling of her feathers (not that I would breed her even if she were able). Look at her eyes/eyelids - she also has poor balance. But she's pretty tough and has survived so far, and the others will snuggle with her, so I haven't had the heart to cull her yet.

Another roost shot, and then some boys at the feeder:

Pretty, sweet birds - I'll say it again, I love my Naked Necks!

Can I be first in line for S&G eggs?

btw I did get freedom and black rangers from Freedom Hatchery last year. Hoping to get increase in size/growth(about 8 month old pullets weighed in at 9-10 lbs with one hitting 12) via those but will see if it's effective or not.

I wish you were closer - we could share an order (if we find 2 other people to share as well...)

Haha that sure would be nice- split the order and getting the chance to talk turkens in person.

That is an idea, find someone local for an reasonable split of order from the hatchery.

Okay...I admit it....I've been eavesdropping on your conversation.

I sort of live in between you guys. Right now I'm in no position to take on that many more chicks, but I'd be willing to consider splitting an S & G order with the two of you somewhere down the line. Since my NNs are my meat breed, if I don't get the kind of results I'm looking for then adding this bloodline may be my best option. Just something to chew on and keep in the backs of our minds.
