Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Oh, that is a given, of course. But I have some lovely marans girls doing really well with that already...

BUT BUT BUT!!! I just remembered - THE DREADED FEATHERED LEG ISSUE!!!
barnie.gif

Well, that's one less project (whew!). No way in H-E-Double-Hockeysticks I'm putting feathered legs on any of my NNs, ever...

Puppy was out this evening when I came outside after work, and I had had a rotten day, so I picked her up and she rode around tucked under one arm while I was collecting eggs, and then snuggled with me on a lawn chair for a while before going back in the coop.

She is so unbelievably sweet (and smart) - so glad I hatched her babies this winter.

Just because she's cute, and the day is not complete without a dose of Puppy love:

I was trying to get a photo of her grazing outside of the paddock the other day, and before I could, she saw me and came RUNNING for a snuggle - I took these three photos in quick succession:

Ok I can't work out how to use the multiple quote do-da, but so many thanks for all this information on fibro and what barring and id does to it, so very interesting. I'm intrigued that some muscles and organs would be darker than others, and that there is a patchy or almost ombre effect! Looking forward to learning more. I'd like to have an all fibro flock with rose combs some day.

And @Kev , thank you for your sympathy for the cockerel. Melody was a birthday present from one of our workers, and I love the way he looks, plus in some respects he's a good boy. But not enough. Though it means I have the fun of choosing his successor.

Love the colour of those marans eggs Ant Farm, and Puppy could never be called anything else with that quizzical adoring look in her eyes.

Would love to get some blue NNs, but I think I'm about as far away as @Phill98 from them, luckily I get to live vicariously through you all

There's a setting for quotes in your personal preference/settings.

I've rose comb fibro NN, it looks rather cool but no roosters at the moment.. trying really hard to keep bird numbers down so had to cull/select very severely.

btw the bones actually are dark. it varies too.. the ones with jet black bones with a purple sheen on them is rather beautiful if grisly... I'm surprised there doesn;t seem to be a taxidermy example of fibro skeleton? I don't know if the color goes away after drying/treating or..?

as for blue NN.. all you need is the blue gene over a solid black chicken.. the koekoeks are genetically black(barring cuckoo is simply the barred gene over a solid black chicken) so you got the black and NN parts covered so far...

Thank you - I have 1.6 acres across the street from work, and my neighbors have 1.5 and 2.0 acres, respectively. It's nice.

When she wants to be picked up, she flaps her wings and then fluffs up her feathers and holds her wings out a little bit and waits - it reminds me of a child holding out its arms to be picked up. So precious. There's never enough Puppy love. It's my favorite part of the day.

The hawks have been SUPER heavy duty stalking the hens, no losses though. Puppy hears the alarm call of whichever rooster sees it first, and takes cover wherever she is. I worry about her because I had another hen (Dotty) that loved to go on walkabout, and she decided to go broody in the bushes where I couldn't find her. These are some of the last photos I got before a fox got her:

I was visiting my oldest group (Tank's kids) today. They are so sweet, especially the largest cockerel, whom I have decided to name Kirk (he loves loves loves me and jumps in my lap). The more standoffish second largest cockerel (who caught up with Kirk this week in weighing) will go by Spock if he is kept. And of course, there's... KHAN!!!!!!!! Kirk (white legs): Spock (yellow legs, and he has some black markings on his feathers near the neck that the others don't have): KHAN!!!!! I weighed and banded all the Aloha NNs today (26 of them, screaming bloody murder the whole time. It was exhausting). Lots of variety. I won't photo bomb at this point - will wait a little bit to see more feathering patterns and post photos then. I have SOOOOO many chick photos at this point (because I photo when I weigh). Struggling to keep them sorted. :th Edit to add: The Aloha NNs are a week behind the Tank and Snape babies (weighing the same at 3 weeks that the others weighed at 2 weeks). I know they need size on them already, but I wonder how much long term effect shipping has on the growth and development, esp. as I'm keeping all these records.... (Tank and his buddies were never shipped - I drove to the hatchery to pick them up.) Anyone know? - Ant Farm
Watch then Aloha roosters. Mine has decided to try be aggressive toward me again. I kicked him so hard today his head rolled to the side a bit and thought I'd killed him. Nope he got up and shook his head and ran to the feeder. About one more time and he'll be soup.
x2!!! I want to turn my blue copper marans in to naked necks! (@Kev , or @bramblefir , or whoever knows, I have a Splash copper marans rooster and 2 blue copper hens and one black copper hen. What sort of naked neck would be best to cross with them to keep close to the blue/black/splash appearance?) - Ant Farm

Quote: Oh, I will. I want to pursue Alohas, but I'm not putting up with man fighters. I wish this wasn't the year I have some many other babies or I would have already spend more time socializing them. I have some catching up to do - they are by nature the jumpiest of all the chicks in the brooder. My own hatched chicks and the S&G chicks are rather mellow (even though the poor S&Gs kept getting manhandled because o the pasty butt thing). The Alohas think the world is ending when I come near. I need to spend some time with them when I can carve out some.

In case you've never seen one, this is what a Silkie processes out like:

Yes, the skin is blue. The meat underneath, a hint of which you can see, and a really deep black/red color, and even the tendons and ligaments are black to nearly black. My Silkies weren't nearly as dark as something like an Ayam Cemani would be, but this should at least give you an idea of what to expect.
