The really dark eggs haven't been high on my chicken bucket list, probably mostly b/c of the hairy legs thing

I only have one green egg layer, she is a genetic layover from my original chickens who all perished in my chickeggedon. So was surprised by it showing up 2 gens later. I would really like more, especially since they are jumbo, but so far none have hatched.

Hmm why is that?

I made a mistake couple yrs ago by culling too fast and hard trying to get bird numbers down.. assumed a bunch of growing out pullets would eventually lay blue or green eggs but alas, only one.. yikes! bred that one with the cx last year.. strangely again, only two out of many pullets are laying blue/green. Made culling that batch easy though, ha..

The first one looks to be a normal blue, not a lavender? Lavender chicks usually are very pale and even colored..

the striped ones most likely black tail buffs, with variable details on back.. buff one, bit early to tell yet.. could also be a black tail buff, but could turn out white if there's a chance at whites.

Yep black, if from mixed color flock probably will show some brown detailing if male.. either solid black or black with brown on head if female.

cute chicks!

I don't know why, they are almost always fertile, and die very late in the incubating.

I think I'm about to get some cross chicks. 5 I think. My husband told me his brother is bringing some over tonight. Seems he is working near a broiler growing Tyson farm, and he found about 5 chicks out and about at his place, they can't take them back for biosecurity reasons, he has no where to keep them so he is bringing them to me tonight. Not sure how old but hopefully not to old to stem their growth to a moderate level.

Hatched 2 EE Nn chicks this weekend! So cute! NN roo over Ameraucana hen, this is 1 of the chicks in the pic, yellow one. Both are yellow and yellow legs, however both Roo and Hen have slate legs, so this is interesting! Both hatched from the blue eggs!

surprisingly those were one of the worst as for heat tolerance. Both roosters and cockerels would die in the summer.. every single one of them. Had to really hurry with breeding these, breed cockerels(they were ok with the heat as chicks) to hens before the next summer came. but when the older hens showed heat intolerance, decided to just call it quits on this breed. Their eggs are not really dark, the good ones lay eggs like the red terra cotta pots.. chocolate speckles and spots seemed to be a trait also. Rather liked those eggs.

Really? Because they are listed in a couple places as heat hardy. I believe Purely Poultry is one of them. Is it possible that it depends on the strain? Could generations of being bred in a colder climate breed the heat tolerance out of them? That's actually a breed that I've been eyeing for where I live here in AZ, I'm disappointed to hear you experienced otherwise...

Hey everyone, I'm getting two Naked necks and some other chicken breeds later this year, I need to learn as much about them as possibly! Im new to naked necks so any information will help!

Hello.....WELCOME...and be prepared to fall in love with the breed. Have you checked out the breed write-ups on them here on the BYC. I ask because I know at least a few of them have written about them and I think you'll find a lot of good info there to get your started.

Feeling a bit frustrated...my DC and big DC/CX boys just aren't able to catch and mount any of my NN girls, and I'm reluctant to stress everyone out in this heat by putting them in confining areas to seal the deal. And even worse, my DC/CX hen doesn't appear to be laying any eggs, even though she climbs into the nesting box and sings the egg song at the top of her lungs, AND she's been routinely mated by one of my NN roosters. I was really counting on hatching some NN-mix eggs from these guys, but it's not looking too promising...and the temperatures are climbing rapidly. By Saturday we're supposed to hit 93*.

So...right now it looks like I may only be hatching 6-10 eggs from my NN/EE matings. I really can't wait to see what this pairing in particular may look like:

Zazzle, who carries the blue egg gene....

...over Muffin, my EE hen who lays VERY blue eggs on a regular basis and looks to me like an impressionist painter got his hands on her.

As you can see, she'd previously been housed with some birds that relentlessly picked at her tail. Those little assailants are gone now, and Muffin has a lovely little tail.

@Kev - Any idea what the offspring may look like?
