Some farmer 6 chickens in the middle of Long Island . I'll act like a farmer when he buys me a farm .

Well, farmer or not.... I can't kill my own chickens...especially if they aren't suffering. So, I guess I will truly never be a farmer

I really love roosters! They are incredibly beautiful! Stinks they have to be the way they are. I know there is a protective reason, but it still stinks!

I also love rooster's! I have 8 so far and we will see about the babbies. I also could not kill anything besides I'm a vegitarian any way. I payed the vet $40 to put down one of my roosters that couldn't walk any more because I couldn't stand the thought of my friend killing him in a questionable way.

Welcome to so CA! Yeah I'm in Sun City/Menifee area. It was 101 here today. lots shade(planting desert tolerant trees would be great idea), lots water and shelter are important. don't use blue tarp over pens/dog runs. if using tarp, use the dark ones with tighter weave- usually brown/silver colored. some people freeze water in liter bottles, mine never used those though... it's much easier to avoid ultra heavy breeds, heavily feathered breeds, especially if feather legged also... some dual purpose hens do ok- RIR do all right. turkens any size do great of course, even if quite large/heavy. light breeds like leghorns, anconas etc do fine. if the birds are not super heavy or feathered, they will move fine. just be sure to have well shaded and ventilated pen.

You live in Sun City? I am moving to Morongo Valley and that is very close. I wanted to know about how my birds are going to take the weather change. I am moving from Santa Cruz but up in the mountains where it is much warmer. I am planning on moving them at the begining of summer so the transition is not so harsh. We are in the upper 80's right now and they have not yet experienced 100+ weather yet.

I have a small flock of up and coming naked necks, all looked like reds as chicks. Then one started turning white as it feathered out and now has buff spots coming in. Any ideas on her color? She also has a little patch of feathers on her head that sticks up. My daughters have named her Princess Bubblegum, she is the favorite out of the flock.

Yes, I would have to pay or give a suffering chicken to the state to put down. I just can't bring myself to do it. We had a chick hatch out, on my second attempt of hatching, with it's brain exposed. My husband put it out of it's misery, but he told me to never ask him to do it again


YOIE- I don't know about the color of your NN, but she/he sure is pretty/handsome! I like the name

Kev, I took your advice, put broody mama in a crate inside the coop. While I moved her I went ahead in threw one more egg under her. LOL!
She's sitting tight on those eggs. I put food and water at the front of crate but it doesn't look like she's moved off the eggs. The crate is rather small
so she doesn't have to take but two steps to get to it. I can tell she hasn't gotten off the eggs at all yesterday. Do I need to worry about her?

SteveW, Thanks for sharing all the pictures. There sure is a lot of variety in the blues and splashes. Love the real light ones, and normally I'm not
a fan of the white/light birds.

No Fin and Jake, but we do have a cat named Marceline the Vampire Queen

. In fact anytime we do anything my youngest daughter, who's 3; says its "Adventure Time" with her foam sword and off she goes!

I'd take her out once daily for potty breaks, otherwise she might accidentally poop on the eggs(and you would have to deal with 'broody poop' on eggs/nest- so nasty...).. also good for exercise & stretching out her muscles. Might have to put her back in the crate as she probably will go back to the old nest box location most/sometimes.

Yep, it's a comfortable 90 degrees today.

It is not here We needed the rain to prevent fires and wash pollen away, but it has been dreary and will be for a few days. The rain has also brought cooler weather, which has messed up my plans of keeping the four week olds outside. I'm kinda tired of chicks in the house
