Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I have never had a NN rooster that is aggressive to people, but they can be real fighters with other roosters (actually looks quite funny as they don't have the neck feathers to stand up, but it does mean that the neck area can be badly ripped). My smallest rooster, Arian is the worst, picks fights regularly. My biggest rooster, Gordon, never picks fights, but will defend himself very effectively with his inch long spurs. He is the SWEETEST bird ever with people.

Vamvakas, that white rooster just looks like he has too much attitude!

If a rooster ever gets too nasty with other birds, or if they are EVER nasty to people, then they have to go, no matter if they are the best eye-candy ever.

Hey Sandie, How the weather

Really has it cleared ? You know some males can be loved down a bit and learn better behavior, if not they go one way or the other. The two that I have now are good so far but soon will be doing the dance.

Where do I start, Flower?

Floods replaced by this

A foot of snow and we were snowed in for a week.It melted and then we had gales and flooding again....worse than the time before. In the horrid storms we had, 3 chooks failed to come into the coop at night and never re-appeared (the fox I think).

Just looking on "How to build your own ark from a blown down barn" web site........

Wooow, PG, that is 'post card' beautiful! Looks cold and serene.
One extreme to the other there, seems like : ( Sorry about the lost chooks. Is it too late to hope they might show back up?

I know, Pinkglory, they make me smile every day!

How's the hatch going Becky?

I just had to go in the hatcher and pull 3 stuck NN chicks out of the shell this morning. My fault they were stuck, I hadn't paid any attention to humidity (or lack of) and then was a day late moving them to hatcher.

edit: I have only one had a rooster behave agressivly toward me. I was keeping a group of 'game birds' for someone, with the intent of hatching their eggs for a season and returning them ALL to their owner (he was working out of town and wouldn't be home to tend incubator / hatcher / chicks). Anyway, this stag never settled in and hated me (I didn't think much of him, either). His owner said he had never shown any 'human-agression' --- but I could only go in and collect eggs AFTER I had tossed a laundry basket over him.
None of the roosters raised here / bred here here have ever shown any sign of agression.

DDD, the chooks have been gone for 3 days now....so I'm sure that they won't come back. Those poor ewes in the pic are pregnant....though they are locally developed and so have very thick, waterproof fleeces......they haven't evolved the webbed feet yet, though.....

I hope your hatches go well, DDD (humidity notwithstanding) and Becky. I'm sure we'd all love some chick pics......they always brighten up the day.

Had to tell you about one of my new hatched NNs. I had to help it from the shell on day 22. I could see the egg moving, but no pipping. I carefully cracked the shell and saw the problem. It's neck was totally twisted backward and was down it's back. His feet were tucked to the back under him and his neck was literally over his shoulders. (Like he was doing a back bend!) And it had grown so big it, there was no room for him to move his head around to pip! I'm glad I got him out. The odd thing is is that this chicken has no hair on its back ...from his naked neck down to his butt....except for one thin row of down right down the center of its back. He is resting!

In all, I got 4 NNs, 2 non-naked necks and 1 Blue laced red wyandotte! Very excited! Will send photos tomorrow!

Awesome!!!! Congrats!!!!!!! can't wait to see the pics.

Congratulations Becky!!!

For Becky: Right top and bottom show lack of feather pterylae (Ithought they were called tracts, but that doesn't sound right now).
Your last chick is probably NaNa and has even less feathers.

Can this chicken live without feathers on most its body? Or will more grow in? I mean, it is naked from neck to total butt area except for a little stripe down its back!
