Growing any plant out here in the SW desert is a big challenge. Even when I move back to AZ at 5K feet I need shade cloth over then entire garden. Most plants fry up in constant sun. Only two areas where there is some afternoon shade. I need to get back there and start watering my trees. I see no eveidence that the tenants watered anything.
It'd be SO nice to grow nice healthy things like your own mango, bananas, loquats etc, right? I pretty much 'gave up' and am sticking to plants that actively grow during a cool/wet season- mostly Meditranean, South African species. Testing out Cenathous(sp? aka California lilac) as privacy/windscreen hedge right now. Better off ordering from Duane Urch to save some money.
I would not attempt any mellon but Betty my friend who keeps my birds at her place did raise some last year and said that they were sweet. I'll ask her where she got them. It may be that she bought a starter pack at home depot. It is best to save seeds but I am not sure if she did. I do save my seeds. I have no time for MONSANTOVery true. Foolishly thinking about trying to grow watermelons in raised bed- to protect against gophers and rabbits this year. Any suggestions on good hot dry summer varieties with yellow or orange fleshes and should I start early, like in April or within this month?
