Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Oh yes! Already have one very successful sneak snack- "onion rings"- calamari. That one surprises people so much, have won converts. Most won't ever try it again despite it being delicious to them.

It did backfire the last time- turns out that person person was allergic... she um, was 'on fire'(hint, had to use bathroom very frequently and was painful) for three days..... to this day any mention of squid or calamari in her presence gets a real nasty glare in my general direction....

I took my daughters out for a girls day and tricked my 16 year old into trying fried calamari. She doesn't like seafood. My 14 year old loved it, knew what it was but we didn't tell my oldest daughter. She loves onion rings so I just 'knew' she would like it. She made the LOUDEST gagging sound possible, in a very nice, quiet restaurant. It was so bad a gentleman sitting at the table behind us jumped up with fear of what might follow the horrible sound...I was so embarrassed. She felt horrible too and just kept saying she was sorry...Her sister thought it was hysterical and loved the fact that she didn't like it because it meant more for her!

Hi Everyone! I have 1 Rooster and 4 Hens about 6-7 weeks old. They are Turken/Rhode Island Red cross so would they be considered a Turken/Naked Neck? Would I be able to join this group? Thanks for the replies in advance!

Hi there! My son's class did a project (preK) on hatching chicks. Only 2 out of 23 hatched :(
So I said i'd take the two knowing they might be roosters. Nobody wanted just 2. I have 3 adult birds now. Anyway!

They hatched on 4/10. One is for sure a NN, the other I have no idea yet. Here's Jasper the NN. Don't know what he/she is crossed with or if he is a he or a she. First one was 10 days (yesterday) second two were from this evening.

Im pretty new to this thread myself, got 4 nn's at market last week. I have no clues to anything about them. I say welcome. We are here to learn, share, educate, least of all judge :) seems like a very nice well educated bunch here. Im sure you will find good people here. Im fully alone here in my country so forums like these are my only way to talk to others regardless of one chick or thousands of stock.
To the last poster welcome too, one of your looks like my little "Emu" my daughter said thats what they look like! Im hoping along with everyone to learn since the region im in is where these should work best. Then I take what I learn and share with locals. At least the men at the markets now are giving me a heads up now, lol. Knowledge is respected. Looking for some turkey eggs each time I go. But I know a few people who offered eggs once I got room.

I have 2 NN in my small flock of 8. They are all just 29 weeks old and to my surprise one of my NN went broody. I waited a few days to see if she was going to stay put on the nest and after 5 days I ordered some fertile eggs for her to sit on since I would love to increase my flock to 12.
She is taking her job very seriously and did not come off the nest to eat or drink for the last two days. I have been hand feeding her fermented feed but she won't take water from me. In AZ its already mid 90's. So this morning I decided to take her off the nest in hopes that she would go back. She was off for about 8 minutes, did her business and climbed right back on top of the "falsie" eggs. I should have the fertile ones by Wednesday.
Is it normal for NN to go broody and so young? Should I continue to take her off and hand feed her or just let her do her thing? The most important thing to me is her health. My NN are by far the sweetest in my flock!
Thank you!

I would for sure make sure she has water w/I neck reach while she is broody w/ those temps and her dedication. I hand fed my broodies too. They would get off to take care of their business, but I made sure they had extra high protein (bugs) treats all while they were broody. I also made sure they had water they could reach w/o getting up.

Here is a pic of Rudy in action this morning (well just a wing flap, but it is so cute when he does it) he is two weeks today.

Thanks, she has water right next to her nest but she would have to move off to get it so I will move it closer and continue to hand feed her twice daily. Thank you!
Can't wait for my eggs to get here!!!

Rudy so cute! Seems to have a green tint or is that just lighting? I love my babies took more pics today as my older 5 are now 3 wks old. Getting hard to tell some apart so might look into ties or coloring toes but my daughter freaked when I suggested using HER polish on chicken toes. Ok so color on zip ties.
