Naked Neck/Turken Thread

This is off topic but I took my school bus physical and my biggest phobia is being a doctor office. I can touch bugs/not scared of clowns or anything else but I being in doctor office is my phobia. School bus physical did almost a full body cavity search pretty much..

I would for sure make sure she has water w/I neck reach while she is broody w/ those temps and her dedication. I hand fed my broodies too. They would get off to take care of their business, but I made sure they had extra high protein (bugs) treats all while they were broody. I also made sure they had water they could reach w/o getting up. Here is a pic of Rudy in action this morning (well just a wing flap, but it is so cute when he does it) he is two weeks today.

Lol fear of doctors offices, well we all got our phobias. On the NN question, if its got no feathers on the neck but a bib or ascot bunch in front or completely nude like Rudy regardless of breed its a NN. This is a chicken bred for the purpose to reduce feathers. So an engineered bird. Can be from any breed (wonder what a polish cross would look like lol) just meet the requirements of no feathers at neck. Please correct me if I missed something cause yes im new to these guys too and only going on what ive learned so far. I still need to learn sexing, comb, and what is undesirable for these cuties.

Yes they would be defined as naked necks just not pure. However I believe that many folks have them mixed.

Yes on the visual display of nakedness on the neck, even w/ a big bow tie, they are NN. Rudy is the offspring of two known NN, but he is not naked b/c of that, his nakedness has nothing to do w/ the NaNa gene set, his nakedness is from the scsc gene set, completely different and has nothing to do w/ the NaNa.

The scsc gene set is not "engineered" or man made in any way, it is naturally occurring, first found in New Hampshires (breed) back in the 50's and nurtured among enthusiasts since then, but very rare.

The chickens scientists are trying to take advantage of this naturally occurring genetic difference to make it more ecomonical to grow chickens en mass for meat in more tropical areas where it has been to hot to grow commercial chickens, but so far haven't made much progress at least publicly.

Ohhh my dream chicks lol. My bil has a polish maybe I can do a breed if I have been lucky and have two of each sex. Im curious if you breed NN how long would you have to breed out any cross breed and get one like Rudy? Or is he more of a rarity? Got a few years before I could even have good stock built up but I can look to future pairings. If I want a best cross what should I look for? Ive seen cornish but unless I buy babies I cant garantee healthy stock until I can get to know the people better and communicate my needs. I think polish mix would be a nice fancy here lol. Also if I cross which sex is better to work with as in I own the female or owning the male? I would also need to know with a mating how long is sperm viable as in eggs to expect from that mating? What mix gives best rate of success so far?

*disclaimer* I personally, and probably incorrectly, look at it this way...

Someone explained it on here to me, I wish I could remember who, that naked neck is a breed and a trait. With that in mind, if a bird meets the breed standard for a Turken/Naked Neck, I view them as a Turken. If a bird has naked neck traits but doesn't meet the standard, I would call it a Naked Neck. I refer to all of mine as NN just because its easier and I personally don't care what mine are called.

Kind of along the same lines as referring to an offspring of an blue/green egg laying breed as an Easter Egger because they don't meet the breed standard. I also do not know what the breed standard is for a Turken, comb/feather coloring...I should look that up!

If you are breeding crosses for a specific reason, egg size or production, I would refer to them as type/type crosses so people who are interested in certain traits know what they are getting.

That is all 100% my personal view on my personal flock.
