Thanks! They hatch mostly white, and then the black comes in like this. The parents had pretty similar mottling. The rooster had more white than the hens. These guys are looking a bit whiter than the parents, but that could change as they age, of course.

Are there pictures of the parents? Do any grow out solid white or nearly so with only a few black feathers?

Pretty birdie! Interesting it's patterned like that so young. What sort of mottling do the parents have? Do you ever get the exchequer type mottling? I haven't worked with mottling very much.. the usual wisdom is they start out with penguin feathering.. so it;s a bit of a surprise to see yours like that so young.

I was surprised by that as well Kev, my mottled girl started penguin, then looked badly barred (really faint) in the front and mottled in the back and was pretty old by the time she had complete mottling over all areas.

Thanks for the info. I suspect the father to my mystery cockerels was a salmon faverolles. That is a bummer since I don't like them and had not idea I'd been getting them with the eggs I hatched. The turken does not have 5 toes, but he definitely has the Faverolles coloring. Maybe the rooster that fathered him was a mix and only passed the 5 toes onto some of his offspring.

What breeds are the potential parents? btw is the hen the only NN and what's her comb type?

Because if she has pea comb, then he is very possibly really a wheaten marans x your b/wNN hen. The color is right and so is the amount of leg feathering. If she's not pea combed and is the only NN well then that comb rules out the marans....

Yeah exactly, that's just about the normal way mottles are 'supposed' to feather out...

Congrats! I can't play with the birds too much due to chicken dander allergy but it is really cute when an tame one comes up and says 'hi'.

couple more Q's, are the chicks white with random crisp black dots 'anywhere on the body' or are they penguin marked with a very considerable amount of white?

It is normal for mottleds to get whiter as they age. In fact it's this reason there are separate lines of mottles for show... those that have perfect mottle as pullets/cockerels... and a separate line for adult hen/cocks. The pullet/cockerel lines get the right amount when young but as they mature the mottles get too big for show standard.... the hen/cock lines either barely have any or the mottles are too few/small when young.

I'm asking you so many questions because I'm surprised by that chick.. don't know enough to make good guesses.. am wondering if you may have exchequer(which would be very, very nice! and good true exchequers are very uncommon in any breed) or the look may be due to dominant white- that is why I am asking about chick down and if there are any birds that turn out solid white or white with very few colored feathers.
