Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Thanks! Well, yes, we have raccoons, skunks, possums, etc. I recently had my property fenced (8 ft fence) which should hopefully keep out coyotes and packs of dogs (though I suppose they can dig under), but raccoons have been around at night sometimes and I've seen the cats (not mine, but they think they own the place) scale the fence as well. Easier to go with the hard core option. Fortunately, I had some extra hardware cloth around (like, a lot) from an earlier aborted attempt at a PVC tractor (that turned out really badly and got dismantled). The whole she-bang will be encircled with electric fencing (soon - I need to set it up soon!). Next week I start the growout tractor...

They're ALL getting big, but yes, Tank is, well, a TANK. I think they'll be able to make it to next week's weighing (Weds.) before I switch out their leg bands (not snug yet). It's cute to see the little boys facing off in short "pecking order" type skirmishes. It's sort of like Lord of the Flies in there... That reminds me, next task is to figure out future back up rooster housing.

If you are referring to the photo, I think you might mean me? (@BantamFan4Life
was quoting me.) These are the chicks I got from Ideal. (All the New Hampshires ran and hid from me - cowards! The Naked Necks are so curious and friendly, they are easy to catch with the camera...

I know they're only 2.5 weeks so far, but I am SO pleased with these chicks...

I probably misread. Sorry. Been feeling under the weather today. I haven't been out except to take care of the chickens. I didn't even go to church this morning.

So anyway: @Fire Ant Farm. Those are nice looking NN. That is one breed that I never ordered from Ideal.

Ugh - sorry to hear. Yeah, that's one thing about chickens - no matter how bad I feel (migraines included), I gotta go look after them...

Yes, they are nice so far. I tried to look around at all the posts I could find from folks who got NN from Ideal, and they seemed positive, so I took a chance. They are 3 hours drive away, and I really didn't want to put them through the mail if I could avoid it, so it worked out...

LOL! No homophobia here either....but he's already named Heisenberg. I guess we'll just have to reserve the name "Turk" for one of his off-spring. ;) I know I've posted these before, but this is the guy I've been talking about. Love my Heisenberg! His comb and wattles are even bigger than in these photos as these were taken a few months ago. [/quote That could be the most stunning rooster I've ever seen. I don't have any NNs yet, but I've been looking for one... Or at least maybe a fertilized egg I could buy from someone and let one of my often broody silkies try to hatch. Still looking though... Hard to find right now it seems.

I'm going to post pictures of three different chicks. They will be in different posts. I'm guessing all three as pullets. They were 1week old yesterday. They are also already getting tail feathers. I've rad somewhere that pullets start getting tail feathers before cockerels. Anyone know if this is so?
FIRST ONE:

These 3 shots are of what appears to be what is going to be a barred colored chicken.

Big white spit in the head. What appears to be barring coming in on the wings. What looks like a partridge base color though, I've never seen that before. Anyone else.

BACKGROUND HISTORY:

SIre: his daddy was what I call a Silver Barred. This ones ( Silver Barred) daddy was a Salmon colored NN. His mother was a Barred hen ( I'll just say a crossbred maybe Plymouth Rock). So he is really a Black Sex Link Naked Neck.

Mom: she was a Black Crossbred hen. I hatched her out in 2013. She has a very Easter age get shape but doesn't have a beard and lays brien eggs. Her sire was a Black Jersey Giant and her mother was what I call a red Duckwing. This hen ( the Red Duckwing) was by a Ginger Red Easter Egger rooster and her mother was a Production Red ( that equals 1/2 New Hampshire and 1/2 RIR).

Can anyone take a guess where this partridge color comes from? I'm guessing from the Easter Egger heritage. A lot of different colors that I had in my original flock.

I don't know about colours but females usually develop tail early.

Hello! I don't think I've posted on this thread before, but I love Turkens! I had one, but unfortunately she was a victim of a hawk attack several months ago :( However, I hope to order some more from Turnland Poultry. Do you think it would be better to get the White or Red Turkens? I haven't decided yet :)

my white NN pullet looks like angel. she is such a lady she does not get dirty, lol. I have 2 red ones, they are nice birds but look so common.
