Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Okay, the final count was five chicks. One egg wasn't fertile and the other had been slipped in by another hen during my broody's break about a week after she started sitting on the clutch I gave her. So...one more egg added to the incubator.






Momma and chicks are now happily settling into to their own pen and she wasted no time giving instructions to her babies. I'm really impressed by her mothering and enjoying every second of this learning experience.

They're all beautiful, Draye, but I these three are my favorites. 

Long project ahead. Trying to combine all the lines together foir a lot of Calico beauties.

Well.. it depends on what you want/care about. If purity/meeting the standard then this one is a cull. The most likely explanation is someone let a NN breed with a rose-combed-something. Could be a cross, could be generations back but honestly I have never seen a hatchery stock NN with anything besides single so that chick is a big surprise to me.

Years ago there was some talk about getting rose combs accepted into NN standard but it was pretty controversial.

However it seems rose comb in NN can be locally common/typical in other countries.

Other than that, it is purely a matter of personal taste. Some love it, some hate it.

Genetically the only thing it does is make some rose combs a little more naked(larger areas of skin- many of my rose combed Nn seem to have larger naked areas around the crop and shoulders plus bowtie being a little smaller).. other than that, no other obvious effect.

p.s. rose comb is a simple dominant. easy to get rid of or easy to keep floating around if desired. It cannot be hidden- does not float hidden and 'pops up'.

Thanks - that helps. Not sure if it will factor in to whether this chick is a keeper or not, I'll have to ponder that.

I LOVE these pics (especially the second one). I want to paint my nest boxes blue because of you, too!

Third jail break today - they are tall enough that they were reaching up and pulling down the netting and then hopping on top. Several zip ties later and I THINK it's secure. But I spent most of the evening working on the tractor so I can move them out ASAP...

I forgot to say that I want to see his body and type. I saw that picture. How old is he btw? He isn't very old, is he?

He is 18 weeks old as of October 1st.
He is a little smaller than I normally like on my NN's but I'm kind of partial to his line. I can always work in bigger.

I'll try to get that full body picture. I think the type will come in a little latet as he has more maturing to do.
