Naked Neck/Turken Thread

my broody hatched 2 Nns only. the third died in the shell, I don't know why. her egg (mutt) and 6 marans eggs gone bad. am I doing something wrong? last time she hatched 1 only. she is about 1 year old.

I really like fm white bearded girl. She is gorgeus! So what boys do you have now?

Here are the boys I have saved

This is Pie, he is some form of barred, some have thought maybe some mottling too, he is definitely the head boy, by his own decree! lol (I can tell by his comb he descends from my birds that have houdan heritage, so mottling is a possibility)

I need to come up w/ a name for this boy, he has matured slower, but his dark skin has remained the darkest of any boy I've ever had. (the fm boys tend to lighten quite a bit as they mature)

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. There are a lot of different factors that cause eggs not to hatch or something that causes them to die before hatch.

Maybe she'll gradually get the setting down to a finer art. Could be she's staying away from the nest too long. Many things happen.

I have a big cabinet incubator and I've never had 100% hatch rates. I think part if that is the fertility rate isn't always so good. I believe that part if the reasons behind the fertility problems lies with the feed that my roosters are getting. I've read that the laying pellets don't contain everything a rooster needs to maintain fertility.

thank you.
so what feed do roos need? I don't feed them laying pellets but whole corn, fermented wheat, wheat bran, sometimes boiled eggs, greens and they catch bugs, etc. they have egg shells and marble powder for calcium free choice.

the breeder that gave me marans eggs does not have fertility issue. I think it is about my broody. one morning she got up and could not find the way back. but she stayed away from the nest 20-40 minutes only, possibly not more than 30. the temperature was about 57f. all the other days she stayed out for 15-20 minutes and the temperature was higher than 64f. the last 2-3 days she was out for max 5 minutes.

what about Bruno or Moro for a dark skinned boy?

His liver was pale and not shaped right, didn't have tumors, just the whole liver wasn't shaped right. It also had a thick covering on the liver, firmer then it should have been. I'm pretty sure the original issue was hepatic in nature and the other issues were side effects.

Perhaps he had cirrhosis of the liver...after a lifetime of FF...Just kidding, sorta. I'm sure my goats and horses (and cattle , before I sold them) seemed to catch a buzz when fed silage/haylage but they were fed it on a limited basis.

Who knows...I just wonder about about the long-term effects of 'stuff' we feed.

I have read somewhere that abuse of farming land resulted in lack of iodine. we think that corn, wheat, etc contain ingredients they used to. the advise was to add a few drops of iodine in the chickens water in order to help their liver to function properly. I believe this is a good point.

There's a lot of truth in this. Much of the food in this country at least has been stripped of much of its nutritional value. That said, I would rather give my chickens free access to kelp than put iodine in their water. Just my personal preference, but it seems more natural and less likely to result in an overdose.

I didn't know temperatures can be so low at your parts. good luck

Thanks! Cold temps like this don't happen often here, but they do happen, and since this is a strong El Nino year, we're also getting a lot more precipitation than normal. For the first time since I moved to southern AZ we're actually NOT in a drought state, but have a surplus of water. It's a welcome change.

Ironically, one of the coldest temps in the country the other night was in AZ where the nighttime temp in the Grand Canyon fell to -15ºF.

I'm so glad I didn't have to deal with THAT.

If he were mine, I'd cal him Vader....for Darth Vader. He has an amazing presence and is downright gorgeous!

I don't think it is diet related, all birds are visualized (after death) here, natural deaths and killed by me for food and no other birds have had this issue. If it were diet related I think I would see more w/ this problem.
