Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Went to check in on all the chickens roosting and found Pork dead. We are not sure what happened, but she has a weirdly enlarged, swollen artery on one side of her neck and her comb was bluish grey, all deflated looking. Heart failure of some kind? We are absolutely devastated. She was my special girl.. we had decided to keep her indoors permanently because she was so sweet. Breeding plans were totally secondary, it was her personality and not her genes that were irreplaceable. I'm severely tempted to sell off my whole flock except for my other 3 house chickens for fear they all drop dead on me too. Poor Pork... she didn't deserve this. She never got to try fresh spring grass, or learn to cluck, or stretch out in a sunbeam. She was so young. We will miss her so...

RIP poor baby girl...

Oh no! So sorry!

She was so cute!

Our birds really do grow on us, don't they. I have my favorite EE in a dog crate in my house right now because she suddenly took ill and seems to be dying. I honestly thought she'd be gone by now, but she keeps surprising me. She snuggles quietly in my lap multiple times per day, but I know her time is short since she rarely drinks and won't eat at all.

sorry for your loss...

I have been warned not to love any of my chickens. it usually happens that the most beloved ones die. but who can control heart matters?
Thank you. I could not ever see myself doing less than loving them, I remember when I was never to chicken keeping I was discouraged by older keepers in a few instances for playing loose with my heart. But really, I wouldn't be me if I did any less. At least I know Pork was loved for her time here.
Oh, no!!! That makes me so sad.

I'm so sorry for your loss - I know how special she was.

Thank you. She was wonderful. When I hatch more scaleless down the road, it will be hard to not see her in them.

So sorry for your loss

I've only had one naked to go like that, suddenly about her age w/ not s/sx before hand. It was Frick I didn't do a necropsy on him and never figured it out. He would have been like a second cousin to your Pork.

I'm so sorry to hear about your EE.. no chance to get her to a vet? I hope she suddenly pulls through for you, or if she doesn't have it in her, does not linger and suffer too long. At least you can know she won't be scared and alone.
Awww Im sorry you lost her. Know you gave her the best life possible!! Don't you stop, that would be biggest tragedy here.
Thank you. I am not able to think much of quitting already. All of a sudden one of my little serama hens brought me a baby she hatched from who knows where, and it's the only one. Since the last baby I left with my penned seramas died of either poor mothering or trampling, looks like I will be raising a brooder singleton! That takes too much work and attention to worry about giving anything I love up. It is how I ended up raising my first and second chickens who practically run my life, so maybe it is a little blessing in disguise.

I won't go the vet route. Our friend/neighbor is our vet, and while I'm sure he would be willing to help if he could, he told me I probably know more about chickens than he does. That aside, I decided from the start that I will keep things as natural as possible with my flocks...no veterinary care, no antibiotics, etc. I'll go as far as to isolate her for a while and disinfect the coop she occupied at night with her flockmates, but other than probiotics, vitamins, and natural remedies she'll not receive medical care...no matter how much I adore her. I know someone who just spent $300 trying to save one of her chickens, and it still died. I don't have that kind of disposable income to play with.

Also, I am trying to understand the Buy Sell Trade forum. If I want to offer these Turken roosters for the cost of shipping, does that go in free rehoming or in the Sell category?

It is with a heavy heart I make this announcement. Rudy the rudester has died. He wasn't sick or unwell acting, his death was sudden and unexpected and did not involve trauma. His life was as full as any rooster could expect, he got to live his life w/ the sun on his face and w/ his own flock of adoring flockmates both chicken and rabbit. He will be missed.

I'm so sad to hear this!!!! I learned a lot from Rudy, even at this great distance and having never met him personally. Thank you for sharing his life with us.
I'm so sorry. He was beautiful and special.

So sorry for your loss. I know how much you loved and cared for him. He will be missed. We all adored him and his stories.
