Newbie question am sure, but what does the head and comb tuning bright red mean?

When a pullet gets close to laying their comb and wattles turn bright red.

Just candled my eggs. I only have 84 with development. So that is what I have left in the incubator. That would come out to a 75% fertility rate.

From the green Egger project out of 9 eggs set only 1 had any development. After this hatch in about 6 weeks after I'll do another small hatch to check to see if his fertility is any better. Or see if it is my hen that's not getting the job done. I just moved the rooster into another run with another 5 hens and this one. He is still a little young yet.

Here is my break down of the runs.

Right before heading out the door for work I moved the last littles out of icu into the brooder w/ the rest. They are delayed compared to the others but spunky in their own right, and little fighters for sure. I didn't think a couple would make it for sure (they still aren't out of the woods though). They spent almost 2 days in shoes, hobbles, and cup brace. The last 12 -18 hours were hard they were well enough not to want to be in the brace, but not strong enough to leave. Gary is on nursing duties today so ...................

This incubation I put water in the bator every 2 -3 days (keeping it full ) and put the incubator itself in a pan of water. The eggs usually hatch one day early, but this time they hatched right on day 21, still had shrink wrapping. I had 5 eggs that were dead before hatch (late quitters) I didn't open those. One was dead after pipping shrink wrapped, one hatched on it's own, 5 had serious enough hatch issues to go into icu, 1 died in icu, 4 left icu to the booder and 9 had no hatch issues and went straight to the brooder (when I say no hatch issues I mean other then being shrink wrapped and having to be "birthed")

So right now I have 9+4=13 chicks. 3 are feather necked, one is scaleless, a couple are fm but nothing outstanding w/ the fm, two of the NN I think have pea combs and have the pea comb/nn feathering pattern (Beautimous is one)

some people who live near me have a broody but don't want more chicks. I yesterday gave them 11 eggs, 7 Nn pullet/araucana cockerel, 3 bcm and 3 araucana pullets/bcm cockerel.

@Kev will I be able to recognize true bcm from the crosses? these are the araucana pullets




if bc is dominant and the girls are black and blue should all the chicks look like bcm? will they have different combs at least?

btw, I have just lost my beautiful kleopatra. rip

Everyone is still living and seems to be doing well, barely discernable from the easier hatch chicks.

You should recognize them. Your olive eggers will have beards and maybe even different combs, maybe some will be rumpless. Sorry for the loss. What was she silkie croosses with what?
