Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Well, folks, today, Apoc launched a full on total attack on me this evening when I went in to change his water. I'm fortunate that his spurs have not developed/sharpened yet - he went at my shins and boots repeatedly and mercilessly (fortunately I was wearing tough pants and work boots). It took about 4 or 5 pretty firm kicks/shoves in the chest to make him stop. I had already planned to cull him this next weekend (he went after my boot on Sunday), but it was all I could do not to wring his neck right there. I'm processing him as soon as I can get set up for it this week. (I need to finish planting my blackberries first, and that little jerk doesn't get to dictate my schedule!)

Has anyone dry plucked NNs before? (Did I already ask that? I can't remember - losing my mind...)

Also, he's 7 months - I understand I should probably brine him before freezing, is that right? Can anyone remind me of the brine formula? (Sorry, I'm feeling particularly stupid tonight...)

I actually had a complete response to this email typed out right after you posted, but as soon as I hit submit my internet decided to freeze and hasn't worked since. I had to come into work to use the internet...no fun. I managed to save my response to a Word file since I took the time to type out a brine recipe, so if I get my home internet working again I'll FINALLY send you a response.

A few more of the pullets:

These are by a Brown Red rooster.

The one in the back is out of a 3/4 NN and 1/4 EE crossbred hen that aren't NN, but fully feathered, there were two of these hens in there. This pullet is pea combed.

The front one I suspect is from a Wheaten Duckwing NN hen.

This one I'm not really sure about, I think a pullet, but I really wanted a cockerel. That's weird isn't it, wanting a cockerel. I just need a solid black one.
Anyway though it is from my very first 1/2 Jersey Giant hen. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays solid black.

Oh, that's happened to me, but I lost it entirely... I look forward to reading it.

(Oh, and today I noticed that I've got some real bruises on my legs where he went after me - if there was any chance I would waffle about the decision, that's a good reminder...)

Your lucky w/ just bruises, I had an EE roo put a hole in my leg. I went after him w/ a metal pipe, thought I had killed him, but didn't. Gary wouldn't let me "harvest" him b/c he knew his name (the roo knew his own name and responded to it) A preditor put an end to my problem for me.

Once they (roos) start they don't stop, for real. They will pause and let you drop your guard then attack just when you think it is okay and leave your protection (pipe, wood, stick, water hose w/ jet setting, etc...)

Yes indeed - I was very fortunate, because his little "spurs" are just rounded stubs so far - would have had slashes and punctures if they were sharp. And yep, I will be culling him this weekend. He was always just a back up NN boy anyway. Happy with Snape and Tank, Apoc doesn't fit into my plans anyway and I was working up to making the decision. He made the decision a LOT easier for me...

It's nice that I have had experiences with good roosters - I know that I don't have to put up with any inappropriate behavior...

my protection from the roos is I catch them and give them a tight hug. then I pet them for a while and no more aggressive roos.
