Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I find facebook far too distracting especially when looking for folks that know something about a specific subject. ...... jmho I enjoy poking around byc and reading threads on specific subjects...... on that note one of my latest hatchesView attachment 1186401

Sooo cute!!!! I'm really itching to hatch more chicks, but I still have to cull more birds before I can. *Sigh* That darn chicken math!

Yes I have about 15 to 20 roos that will be invited to dinner. some of them soon and hopefully lasting thru most of the winter my hubby so fAR has been very tolerant of all the grow outs but we do not need bear that many roos lol I know that I am having a tough time deciding who gets to stay...... sigh

Ok I am guilty of letting some Roos stay longer than they should...... lol I have a white leghorn thst is 6ish. But the breeding thing is new to me, only in the last year have I had more than one roo to choose from. And now I find there are several nice looking ones...... sigh always something
Don't just go by looks! I have sat and watched my birds for awhile while deciding the keepers. Of the Bresse I'm raising right now, the biggest one that I would've kept is the only one that has shown signs of human aggression. Not badly, but I've been down that road before and know what it could turn into later. Some are bullies, and pick on the other birds more, and I don't put up with that in my flock. I want my birds to be happy and stress free, so bullies and nervous/flinchy birds don't last long either. I want a rooster that's calm, confident, and easy going... because as a leader of the flock their attitude can be contageous to the rest of the flock.

It's been weeks since I've been to the thread lol. Posting photos and sharing here has gotten a tad bit cumbersome so that's why I've been MIA. Not that I was a veteran of the thread, but I'm pretty sure I've forced my way through nearly all of it LOL

Short story, I have way too many birds as well and am hoping to sell quite a few. I'm working on getting breeding pens sorted out and will get my flashy boy set up with some ladies to do some test breeding with, to try to get his genes figured out. 2018 is shaping up to be interesting!

I have a question:

all of my NNs have a big bib. and they breed true (all naked neck chicks). what kind of genetics is it?

if I breed black pullets with a true blue (not BBS) cockerel what colour would the chicks be?

The Naked Neck gene can come in one copy or two copies. Two copies will give the bird a much smaller bib, so your birds probably all carry one copy. You can subsitute it for the colors on this chart and it still pretty much applies: splash=two copies, blue=1 copy, black=fully feathered/no copy. There are no absolutes, though... there's always a bit of roulette involved.

thanks.

I am confused: if my NNs have 1 copy why they all are naked necks (no fully feathered)?

the colour chart says 2 blue birds will give blue and black birds. I have an araucana cockerel that came from a 100% blue flock.

I guess there is a whole science behind this.

The naked neck gene is dominate so you only need one gene to get less feathers on the neck, but it is also a gene that when pure (the bird has 2 genes of it, think double dose) you get even less feathers on the neck and less all over the bird. I hope this helps... there are some pretty heavy science studies on it, but this is it in a nut shell.

Could you post pictures maybe we can help ID genetics by seeing each birds neck. You might have double gene birds and single gene birds.

If I remember correctly NN studies in Africa indicate NN birds generally mature better there meat production wise amongst the village breeds. It is slight but noticeable enough.

Hence my very last sentence... ;-)
