Thank you. My wife named them. My Original has laid two eggs in two days. First one was around 0930 and yesterday was around 1400. Is that normal? Extra Crispy hasn't laid yet and they both hatched the same day. Extra Crispy does the "Egg Song", as I've heard it called on here before, as Original climbs up in her box and pops it out. Kinda fun to watch. Original has started where I'll put my hand above her and she'll squat down and let me rub her hind side. I'm guessing she's looking for love but it's cute. I've never been a touchy grabby person with the birds and this is the first time she'll actually let me "pet" her.

I got them from a friend who got them from a hatchery. I had to look up all the "fancy words" used to describe my Ladies. I'm thinking of breeding but not sure if I want a Turken Roo. Also, they run to me when I go outside and follow me....real close. I'm new to chickens but this seems normal since I'm the one with food. Yesterday and today, they ran in to me. They follow me and usually run behind me but when I stopped, they kept going and ran right in to me. It didn't seem aggressive or anything, almost clumsy like. Any ideas? What about a roo? Any suggestions are great.

What's wrong with a turken roo? They are magnificent beasts.. ask anybody in this thread!

All those fancy terms really concern one gene(mottle= the white tips on feathers) over different "backgrounds". Mottle on a black bird are usually simply called mottle, mille fleur is, IIRC, mottle on a black tailed red. Speckled(as in speckled sussex), now that's one background I can't remember at the moment.. generally it's on a darker red background.

Mottle is a recessive gene, which means in a cross of mottle with non-mottle, none of the offspring will show mottling. But all of them will be carriers of that gene so if you bred back to a mottled bird, half of the offspring from that will be mottled.

Same time, if you picked any rooster showing mottle, all of the chicks will be mottled. Example: speckled sussex rooster and your two girls= all mottled, a lot probably be colored more similarly to Extra Crispy (love the names btw). Naked neck is an semi dominant gene, so the chicks will have naked necks however the bow tie normally(in crosses) will be a lot bigger and cover the entire lower front of neck. Makes it pretty easy to pick out chicks to create a pure breeding for naked neck line once you breed them together..

For making more birds like yours, if no mottled turken rooster is available: either a buff with black tail rooster or red with black tail rooster. Those are the "backgrounds" of Originial and Extra Crispy, respectively. None of the chicks will be mottled- unless you are extremely lucky and have a rooster that happens to carry the gene- not very likely, unless he came from same hatchery source, then marginally possible. Then either keep siblings or just one son to breed back with these hens.

As a newbie to the breed I would like to sing their praises (I keep mainly Brahmas, so have high standards where friendliness is concerned).

My three approx. 24 week olds are turning into the most sweet natured adults ever. At the moment we have horrible weather conditions with severe frost and snow and one of my Brahma boys, Whitey, is a terrible glutton and gigantic, so he does not let my NN cockerel, Mort, feed as much as he would like.

So, back door open, in comes Mort. What do you want Mort?

Now, what do we have here?

This scene plays out very lunchtime. When his (highly visible and bright red!) crop is thoroughly stuffed he walks around casually, we pick him up, have a cuddle, and out he goes.

This happens twice in some days.

One of his girlfriends, Frankie, has taken to spending her nights with Mrs Grey (massive Dark Brahma hen) who curls up to sleep every night with Jared the Border Collie who sleeps outside in the outhouse.(No worries of overnight fox visits with him around).

From my limited experience they have lovely natures and I love their quirky looks.

Okay i was told by my friend that he (moe ) will be a red NN

with tufts lol. But Im glad that this thread is here and that there are people who have NN's cause this is my first time raising a NN EE
