Naked Neck/Turken Thread

OH MY GOSH. I just found this thread and am so excited! We have a naked neck silkie that we brought home from Fowlfest last year. I think he is just beautiful, naked neck and all. I like him so much that I bought an incubator to try and hatch out some eggs. Unfortunately our other roo decided he wanted to be top dog and pecked out one of his eyes

Now I have the poor guy sequestered (with a lady friend) in a different coop for now. They can all see each other but they can't fight. Anyway, since I had this 'bator I decided to buy a dozen Turken eggs and try hatching! First time ever and I'm trying not to be too nervous. I ended up with 15 Turken eggs and some of our easter-egger eggs in the bator. Keeping our fingers crossed we end up with some new turken chicks!

holy cow..I cannot read 171 pages of this lol...

I have 18 wk old turkens...what age should they start to lay...

Thanks..I just want to make sure that we switch feed over at the right time too..

If you scroll down this page there is a chart which specifies feed type related to age. Plus a whole lot more info. It has been said the NNs can start laying between five or six months which is the same time as many other chicken breeds. Some later some sooner

I just bought these 3 off Craigslist for $24. I really didn't need another rooster, but the
price was too good to pass up. Their previous owner was giving the some type of
organic feed. They all had the runs really bad. It's taken me a week to get them stopped up!

They appear to be about 5 months old. They look big enough to lay, but the rooster isn't
jumping on them yet, so they need a bit more time. Strange thing though. The rooster
doesn't crow!

Thanks for sharing. I want to comment on your rooster not crowing. I have two 4+ month old Turken roosters and have never heard them crow. Ever. What IS up with that? I have 6 week old Banties that crow up a storm, but not my Turkens. Is this a breed trait and will they eventually cut loose?

My Turken crows and talks up a storm. He used to compete with my Blue Wheaton Roo. Maybe it just takes them longer?

My last roo (not a turken) didn't crow until he was over 6 months old. He was 100% rooster, but I kept wondering what was wrong with him. But when he started, hooboy did he start.
