Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I think my 5 week old little Blondie is a cockerel. Mum is a petit little Black NN with a clean neck, and I have a horrible feeling dad is a huge yellow roo. of dubious parentage.

He also has the trademark green eyes endemic in my flock.

Wow, if he is 5 weeks old, I would definitely say roo!

I have some NN chicks that are showing a lot of red around the wattles and ears area. They have larger combs also. Is the red an indicator of a roo???

Ooops, they are almost 4 weeks old.

X3. it's been over 100-110, NN have continued to lay.. looks like all of them too. Most of hatchery stock turkens I've ordered thru the years were good-excellent layers too. I suppose avoid Meyer's stock just in case..?

The two black pullets also have beards- tell tale signs can be small wattles as beard normally reduces wattle size quite a bit or they don't look like typical wattles (strange shape or ultra-thin). Check that roo's wattles.... I don't know why expression of beards on NN are so variable.... experienced the same thing in my birds. Less beard than more beard seemed to be the rule. But also, beard is sort of semi dominant, birds pure for beard gene tend to have larger, fuller beards. If you like the look, try breeding the best bearded ladies with the flea market roo and see what happens...
