are you starting with chicks or grow birds?

Ok Nava, to demonstrate my complete lack of experience : what does the term "grow bird" mean?

I'm going to start with chicks. I want to hatch out some bantams and hopefully get a couple of lavender hens from the pair that I have. I'd love to get some of your splashes when you're ready.

My experience is generally like this. Hatchery ones had been all "good boys". Crosses/mixes were everything from good boys to uhm, grilled boys.... (I cull every roo that so much as bites when handled) Even when my nephews were real little, I let them catch the big NN roos without any worry- knew they would never bite or attack them even when grabbed by a little kid. Still, there are butt heads everywhere, think someone had some problems with a hatchrey NN with a slight bit of attitude, so not all are the same.

Now for my question:

I know I saw one or two others on this thread that are in Texas. I am in Texoma, near the Red River and I am going to sell off the Blue Andalusian and SS in one of my coops and repopulate it w/ NN. I am looking for any color, preferably not red though, as most of my NN now are red; large fowl and no Frizzles. The NN pom-pom was rejected by DH, though he wants to focus on NN otherwise.

Can't help- am way over in CA. But thought I'd give an idea- if you like mottling, how about doing a cross of your current NN with speckled sussex before giving them away? Mottled NN seem to be big attention getters.. including mine. Mottling won't show up in the cross as it's recessive, though. Will show up again when they're bred with each other or to another mottled bird.

Lisa, cute babies! I love seeing them while they're still wet & all of their naked areas are way obvious.
