Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Pgpoultry..... you have such gorgeous NN's!!! I am moving a pretty long distance here real soon and once I am settled there, I want to build up my NN flock. I have room to separate as much as I want to there!!! I had to downsize my flock to about 30 big guys and girls (I didn't count the chicks) but even moving 30 chickens 800 miles will be a chore!!! This should be an adventure!!!

Lisa, are you coming 800 miles south?

Yes, this last winter really did us in so we bought some property down in the Thomaston area and closing will be in about 2 weeks. Still waiting on the exact date from the lawyer but it shouldn't be more than 2 weeks!!!! The property already has a barn that can house lots of chickens and over an acre is already fenced so there won't be a whole lot I need to do to get it ready for the chickens and I plan to do more to separate my flock and right now, I just can't do that here too well.
BUT you are not all that far and maybe we can meet up one day!!!

Thank you! It is a lovely state! For you southerners, do you free range your chickens? Mine are free ranged now but I think the fenced acre of pasture. will be more than enough for them but it is not covered. I never had a predator problem here. I do see hawks on rare occasions but it never came down after the chickens. They do have a lot of cover here though where at the new place they won't. The roo would alert everyone and it was something to see everyone run into the barn or under a bush. They would be gone!! I want to start planting things like fast growing trees and bushes where they will be but of course it will take awhile for it to be any cover for them. Any thoughts? Should I section off an area and cover it?
So they will have nice no climb fencing around the acre but nothing over top when we get there. They are used to free ranging right now.

On another site the question of cover in a large open area came up and there are several creative ideas. One person bought a trampoline from Craig s list. Another found faux paper mache rocks that had a tunnel underneath so that the birds could run under them. Some people use a dog house or something similar so that there is somewhere for the birds to hide. I like the idea of making paper mache rocks.

Some chicken wire can be used to make the basic form and then paper mache home made or from a kit spread over the wire than the shape painted grey. ta da

This pair are huge and inseparable....thought you might like to see them together.

Can we come in ?

Don't know what they have been eating.....but, as you know, they are HUGE...Blackchops makes Mort look quite small, and she weighs much more than him. At 23 weeks she has further growing to do.

OK I'll hatch your eggs, I like you both, really.
