Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Yes, especially hatchery stock because these seem to have been bred with dual purpose in mind.

Naked neck mixes from backyards are more hit/miss for that, depending on what they were crossed with or if production was not something bred for. NN x RIR or BR should be reasonable or better layers, but a NN x cochin.. maybe not so much?

It's semi dominant. Cross between 'pure' crested x non crested= all offspring crested, but crests will be small. Tends to be smaller and "slicked back" on roosters.

Crossing the offspring will give a wide range of crests.

She seems hatchery turken crossed with an oriental breed? Oriental breeds in general are more sporadic layers. Guessing that due to small wattles, is her comb pea or walnut? Anyways, my crosses with various oriental breeds were variable in the laying department, some were poor, most were better than pure oriental but not as good as hatchery stock. Many were quick to go broody.

Nava....that piece on combs is great.....comprehensive and comprehensible.....I'm bookmarking it!

Kev, as always, masterful in the genetics department, too.

Just to say my NN X Blue Partridge Brahma, Jezebel, came into lay at 22 weeks and has laid every day for the last 8 weeks. Medium sized brown eggs with super strong shells. She has a walnut comb....mum is NN with a single comb and dad is Brahma.

One of my pure NNs who is just over a year old hasn't laid for months, but she has just re-feathered, so I am hoping for eggs again. Guess she knows she is pure bred and therefore is being a diva!

In my limited experience NNs are friendly and inquisitive and cope admirably with our cold, wet, Welsh-type winters and are great little foragers (unlike my big Brahmas who are just plain lazy and hang around the door all day to be fed). Only my recently acquired La Flèche do better on the foraging front, needing very little feeding at all .(Bear in mind, though, that with the temperature rarely over the 60's in summer and lots of rain grass, weeds and other potential food grows prolifically.)

Hey all!
We all survived our move and the second truck will be brought later this week and I can't find my camera cord to download my pics of my newest little NN chicks!!!! They are cute as a button!! LOL Of course a regular USB cord does not fit in the camera!!! I am hoping to find it this week when the rest of my stuff is here. Those little chickeys survived the move at only 1 week old!
Glad everyone is doing well here!!! I have just been too busy to post alot! Hoping for things to settle down soon!

Thanks Nava and Kev, I know where to come for sound advice!!

I ordered some Swedish Flowers and hope to add some crested fowl to my flock.

NewToFarming, I visited Georgia last year and kept thinking "I could live here." All that wonderful flat
land, forest, and greenery!!! Make sure you give us pics of the property too when you find that cord.

pgpoultry, my purebred NN stopped laying as well, she finally stopped being broody after 4 mos!

Kev, what's the genetic possibility that a being a Diva affects egg production?

SPEAKING of Diva, flower gave me a priceless beauty, her very own Diva! A Showgirl, and she's as sweet as she is lovely.

I've got to get MY camera out 'cause my little cockerel is sure feathering out pretty with all those green feathers popping out from under the barring.

Ok, got my words out for the morning.

Knocked Kneed hen.... Thanks, I will! I am going through picture withdrawal right now! LOL
I really love it here. I am loving not having to wear a coat at the end of October. Where I am, it is not totally flat. I call them rolling hills. I guess they are considered mountains but I grew up in the Appalachians of PA so these are more like hills to me.

I did initially look at property in a different area but that was way to flat for me but this area I thought was gorgeous and I still had my hills & woods!
I still have lots of work ahead of me but my chickens all look so much better and are really thriving here!

thank you all for the support, it finally paid off we got our first pic of the week.

keep on submitting those NN pics.

let's not let this be the only one, who's got next..........................................?
