Naked Neck/Turken Thread

You love being bad!!

Okay, here's what I just posted on the SFH thread:

I have some info on genetics filed away and found this tidbit of information under Diluters of Black and Gold - •lav -- lavender.-- recessive. Black becomes gray and red feathers become cream.

In the case of my chick the grey is grey and the red is red, not cream. So I would conclude that the color is from blue and not lavender.

Kind of sounds like I know something doesn't it?

Now someone else will come along and tell me I'm totally off.....

@ Hamburg, I bet those would be some big beautiful productive birds! Welcome and can't wait to see what you do. In addition to the wonderful attributes already mentioned, they tend to be very friendly birds. For those of us that like to cuddle our critters that's important

Well S**t you just confused me.

Good work, KKH. afaik, no lavenders. blue definitely present in SFH.

Fun hands-on genetics: breed your blue SFH with blue NN & see what colors they produce. Any splashes would be proof it is blue, as splash is the "pure" form of blue. Only way to get splashes is if both parents are at very least, blue.

also breeding the 'bird in question' to a solid black can give clear results because all-black is basically dominant(oversimplifying but the basic idea stands..), so chicks would come out black/mostly black. If the 'BIQ' has blue, then half of the chicks will be solid/mostly solid blue.

No special requirements for NNs because they are tolerant of heat and cold as per many previous posts here.
Most of the pretty colorful adults (especially those with rose or pea combs) look like disney cartoon ballerinas. Of course that is my opinion and aesthetic value.

KKH Navas blues are looking more and more significant. Lets place the order early spring. And a roo will certainly come along somewhere in the bunch.

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement. It is fun for me to think and dream about my chickens and what I might do. We will see if things come together. Since you nice folks have expressed an interest I will post updates from time to time.

My first hatch was a mix of my eggs, including those from the Delaware/NN coop. Girls were typical NN pullets, they are just starting to lay, even Annie Not (my first NN pullets were Annie xxx) Annie Not didn't get any na genes, and looks like a production red hen. The boys were feathered like the Delawares, and one came out looking like a BR even if they had naked necks.. The barred boy disappeared one day. I think his momma was Annie Black, my only black pullet. Anyhow, all the extra boys were good meat birds for DH and I, each one was worth 2 meals. I want to get more chicks in the spring and increase my NN flock. I sold the Delawares, they were eating twice the food of any of the other breeds, and not that much more productive. Stinkers too.

My experience is the NN/Del cross gives meaty males, short on the brains, though Nikki is slowly learning his duties, the other roosters teach him well.

Finally found a solution for Oakley. We will take him to the vet next week, and for about half the price of putting my cat to sleep, they will take care of him. I consider this a gift to myself. I'll miss him He really is a sweet boy.

Hi everybody! I have my first NN babies, 8 weeks old now, and I'm having a really difficult time determining the sex of these guys/gals. I would love any advice! Thanks!

These Turkens are 7 weeks and the EE's 8 weeks:
