I originally had 3 Easter Eggers and 3 Red Stars from mypetchicken.com. Out of the 6, I got rid of 2 EE'ers after 9 months because they were so noisy I was scared the cops would show up and fine me for having chickens. I kept 1 EE'er and she never cackled or anything after laying. She peeped when I'd go outside and follow me around some. She also liked to peer into the patio door and once actually knocked on the door and came in when the door was opened. She died this week from the hot temps here in Central Valley, California. At least I think that's why. There isn't much explanation for her being in the nesting area dead after being alive and running around all morning. I think she was trying to lay and she always took an hour to two hours to pop those little medium sized eggs out. If it was the laying so long, she could have dehydrated with 110F temps that day. Or it could have been a spider bite or egg bound and I didn't know it. She did have some type of white pox stuff on her comb so maybe that could have contributed. Not sure. The other hens aren't infected with the pox.
However, my Red Stars hardly ever cackle but when they do it's for specific reasons like a dog got in the yard or if Twinkie escaped the deer mesh fence and couldn't get back in, she'll holler. And ever since the EE'er died, if Penny can't see the other two she'll holler until she finds them. I think they know Lily is gone. Easily fixed by tossing out treats if one of them starts up.
I have 3 Australorps on order for next week but I'm sort of scared they'll cackle after egg laying after reading tons of reviews I have mixed feelings on them. I don't want to get cops over here from the noise so it's kind of scary. If they make racket then I'll have to get rid of them. But I'll know to get more Red Stars if these other ones are noisy because I'm well pleased with my Stars. Too bad the minimum is 7 chicks! I don't need 7 more hens but I can always find homes for the extra ones or keep them and try to find buyers for all those eggs. LOL
I will try to remember to post about their characteristics later after they start laying.
