Name your quietest chicken breed - Poll

my silkie pullets is *very* quiet compared to my other chickens. as far as hens go, my EE are the loudest and my Ameraucanas pullets are very quiet in comparison. anything that crows is loud to me

My Silkies were super quiet before they started laying, they are NOT any more. My 2 Ameraucana's are pretty quiet, by my quietest girl is my bantam RIR. She talks alot but has an extremely quiet squeaky voice, it is so cute.

My dominique hen is super quiet and she is queen of the girls. She has a quiet little sing song cluck when she wants attention from me, but when hanging with the others she doesn't make a sound. Speckled Sussex by far is my loudest if you leave out all mention of boys and their crowing.

My cochins are quiet...rooster crows a few times every morning and thats it. Polish girls chatter all day, rooster crows on and off all day. Have had silkie roosters who never shut up, another polish rooster who never crowed. My black faced spanish never shut up. Japanese bantams never made a sound.

My orps are only tally when laying. My EE is very quiet. My orp roo does crow in morning and if there are goings on around him during day, but I'm guessing stealth chicken owners don't have Roos:)

Ok NONE of my girls have started laying

but at this moment I have two bantam Aracaunas that are about 9 MONTHS OLD and bantam BR, Wyandotte, Silkies, and Polish that are over four months old. They all make different noises but unless I am standing near them I don't hear them. They sound like little gremlins or something. The only time I ever hear them is if one of them gets separated and can't find the others...or if they get startled - which is very rare. Then I HEAR them from in the back room with the tv on. BUT I am the only one in my house that hears it. It isn't loud enough to be annoying....I guess I am just attuned to it and it is loud enough that I perceive it...but no one else in my house does.

I originally had 3 Easter Eggers and 3 Red Stars from mypetchicken.com. Out of the 6, I got rid of 2 EE'ers after 9 months because they were so noisy I was scared the cops would show up and fine me for having chickens. I kept 1 EE'er and she never cackled or anything after laying. She peeped when I'd go outside and follow me around some. She also liked to peer into the patio door and once actually knocked on the door and came in when the door was opened. She died this week from the hot temps here in Central Valley, California. At least I think that's why. There isn't much explanation for her being in the nesting area dead after being alive and running around all morning. I think she was trying to lay and she always took an hour to two hours to pop those little medium sized eggs out. If it was the laying so long, she could have dehydrated with 110F temps that day. Or it could have been a spider bite or egg bound and I didn't know it. She did have some type of white pox stuff on her comb so maybe that could have contributed. Not sure. The other hens aren't infected with the pox.

However, my Red Stars hardly ever cackle but when they do it's for specific reasons like a dog got in the yard or if Twinkie escaped the deer mesh fence and couldn't get back in, she'll holler. And ever since the EE'er died, if Penny can't see the other two she'll holler until she finds them. I think they know Lily is gone. Easily fixed by tossing out treats if one of them starts up.

I have 3 Australorps on order for next week but I'm sort of scared they'll cackle after egg laying after reading tons of reviews I have mixed feelings on them. I don't want to get cops over here from the noise so it's kind of scary. If they make racket then I'll have to get rid of them. But I'll know to get more Red Stars if these other ones are noisy because I'm well pleased with my Stars. Too bad the minimum is 7 chicks! I don't need 7 more hens but I can always find homes for the extra ones or keep them and try to find buyers for all those eggs. LOL

I will try to remember to post about their characteristics later after they start laying.

As a newbie to joining the ranks of backyard chicken owners what is an EE? We bought 2 Red Sex Links (at least that's what they called them but I can't find that breed anywhere - I have seen Gold Sex Links) and they are the quietest & friendliest chickens I have ever been around!
