Name your quietest chicken breed - Poll

So the Quail does not get counted?

Did I have a hanging chad?

Think about this, you can pick out a single diesel engine running in group of standard ones right? So if you want to blend in, you would opt for the standard engine right?

ETA: Plus: Quail Roo's do not crow, how's that for quiet?

No question, Silkies...mine are the sweetest, quietest, most docile chickens I've ever seen. They make the sweetest little sound, and I've yet to hear the rooster crow. Maybe mine are just quiet, though. Even when my nephew's lab, Lady, grabbed one of them and played keep-away for a while, (to my horror) the chick just made these little chirping sounds. Thank God we rescued him and he is just fine.

Coturnix quail are little laying machines but the cocks crow.

I had 30 in cages in my garage at one time. The neighbor said that she though that there were crows nesting in the trees behind my house. I never quite figured that one out - they didn't sound like crows to me but they did crow . . . uh, she thought that there were those large black birds nesting behind my house . . . uh, Corvus species. Coturnix cocks make noise . . . some.

WOW - I am surprised. I have 8 EE's and there is NO WAY they would get my quiet vote.

ONE is name EXPRESSO - because she is always expressing herself.
Another is called JUBILEE - because she is so joyful.

:)My vote goes for LEGHORNS.

I have Wyandottes, EE, Marans, and Leghorns.

BY FAR the Leghorns are the most quiet.

The EE's are the most Vocal.
The Marans are next most vocal.
The Wyandotte are pretty mellow - - - but not as quiet as the leghorns.

We have a black Silkie Hen that is very noisy-she makes this strange cluck-growling noise. Out of the 10 or so breeds we have the Standard Cochins seem to be the quietest. Good luck - chicks are like kids, they're all different!

I truly think that all breeds have a possibility of being loud based on many factors...

I had to laugh when a couple of you said that the Buff Orpington was quiet!! That is the loudest bird I have!!

Next loudest are my Americana's, which someone also said were quiet.

It really has to do with how you raise them as to how they act..

With that said,

My Red Star and Black Australorp dont make a peep!!

Good luck!

Pete

My silkies by far are the most quiet. I have only heard my silkie roo crow once. They are also the sweetest and perfectly content to be carried around my yard by my daughters as if they were stuffed animals. I love them!

my silkies are very quiet, the roo crows but his crow is very low and the silkie roos i've had before were similar - very low compared to ther bantam or standard breeds. My hens only get noisy when they got a very tasty treat (grub or worm) to fight over or are having a fit over laying an egg. but again they aren't nearly as noisy and the other chickens or any chicken i've ever had.
