Need advice on a rooster with no legs

I don't think prosthetics would be a good idea, unless they're very short. He doesn't need that extra height, it'd just make it harder for him to balance. All he needs is to have his stumps protected from the ground, and enough friction to not fall over.

Fishkeeper's probably right. My hen with one leg uses her wings for balance and extra boost when she needs it. She does wear down her wings feathers a bit doing that, but not too badly. She has chosen not to roost standing up, but she does get onto the highest part of her cage, a stack of two 2x4s. I didn't pad it, but I think I will try padding part of it as micstrahan suggested, to see if she prefers that to the plain boards.

This young lady in Australia is collecting frostbite data as part of her chicken foot prosthetic research. Your info on Bael could help her, and she might be able to assist with prosthetics at some point, too.

She sounds like an amazing girl, I posted about Bay for her research.

I took a few pictures after today's bath and wrapping. His stubs look like they have healed pretty well.

@LynMcLean

Happy February!
I'm wondering how your little roo is doing? I have a feral peacock who is about to lose both his legs to the hocks and I need to make some decisions about his future. I'd love to hear how winter has gone.
Thanks,
Kerri

Hi Kerri!
Bae is doing great! He is a full time house chicken. He lives in cage in a spare bedroom and has a window he can look out and see the other chickens, and of course he can hear my other roos. He loves all the extra treats he gets (but not too many as I don't want him to get fat). He has always been a sweet, tame rooster, and now he loves to sit in my lap on the couch.
He hasn't been outside since its been cold, but during the summer and fall he loved going outside. When walking it takes him a little bit to gain his balance at first, but when he starts moving he does fine. He can't defend himself from the other roos (or hens) but he sure can run to me when they start to pick on him.
Good luck with your peacock
