Need advice on a rooster with no legs

Bay got to go outside today. It was finely warm and dry enough to set him down. He took off like a shot! I was not expecting that. He was almost as fast as when he had legs. Once I finally caught him, I held him and let him talk to the flock. When we came back in I changed his dirty wraps, soaked his stumps and sprayed him with Veterincyn (just in case). After letting them dry I reapplied the wraps. Either I'm getting better at it or he's getting used to being wrapped as it gets faster and easier each time. I bought some tender tape and it works perfectly.
I remembered that I had some dog boots (that my dog hates) and thought that they might work for keeping his bandages clean while outside. View attachment 1727928

Too cute! Thank you so much for the update. :love

Is he a d’uccle? Did he have heavily feathered feet? I assume the frostbite took his comb also? It looks good. :)

(I’m setting d’uccle hatching eggs today! Yay!)

It's all fine and good to talk about how backyard chickens are cost-effective and provide food, manure, etc.

However, there is also a higher level of value that a backyard bird brings as a pet, a learning experience about dealing with adversity, and about exploring our own life values.

Please let's remember that we all have our own birds for different reasons. We each have our own unique bundle of resources to spend on our birds. And we will all go down our own paths.

We cannot cookie-cutter every backyard bird owner to the same outline, and we should not. Let's instead offer each other friendly advice based on our experience and knowledge.

Thank you! You are exactly right everyone has their own reasons for why they have these amazing creatures as well as what they can set as their own limit financially that's not for anyone else to judge. Myself for example I love my chicks like no other and even they are sick I do everything in my power to help but I can't justify spending over a certain amount to help them when i have 3 children that I would be taking from. Another thing I actually started reading this because I too had a rooster who took off when I was feeding them in -30 degree temps I searched but couldn't rush myself I did finally get him back in but by then unbeknownst to me the damage was done. That was in Jan them out of no where exactly how this person described started happening to my boy. Finally after 2 months of researching on this sight jan and feb in March I decided as scared is I was to be judged I felt terrible enough that it was time to join byc and get help, advice or someone that knew what I was going through and thankfully I had some amazing compassionate people give advice and I actually had hope and then came the attack. I would cry they made me feel so terrible and finally I just stopped getting on byc. Up until yesterday when i was looking for coop ideas. But with neg comments trust people feel bad enough they don't need judgement they need help and sadly thru don't come here for fear of judgment.

I set up the pet playpen and put Bay and his two favorite girls, Tinkerbell (Silkie) and Tiger Lilly (D'uccle) in with him. He started the mating/ wing dance as soon as he saw them! He even tried to challenge my big rooster Rocky (through the safety of bars) that lives with my ducks. It is amazing how much spunk he has through all of this!

He is hatchery quality D'uccle. He had feathered legs when he was younger, but one of the hens enjoyed eating his feathers (bad habit that I tried everything to break). He was the only one she picked on. This is what he looked like at 5 months.

It is nice to see that he is acting like a normal little rooster. It would be nice if he could have his 2 hens around him all the time. He reminds me of my mille Fleur rooster Sarge, who had a d’uccle, 2 silkie, and 2 polish hens as mates. They were a small flock within the large flock they were raised with. D’ccle roosters are usually less agressive, and mine knew that he was the surbordinate rooster.

I am impressed with his recovery and your attention to his needs.

I have been following along. You both are real troopers.

Forgive me for the giggle but the pic in dog boots made me think.....
"Aww he's a booted bantam!"

Update:
Bay is doing great! On good weather days he gets to go outside and "help" me with yard work. I have tried a few different things for a prosthetic, but so far nothing has worked. He seems to get around just fine, but I'm still concerned about future damage to his bones.
The last time we were outside I let the rest of the chickens out to free range and whenever on of the more dominate hens or other rooster would get close to Bay he would make a low noise and come closer to me. I put my hand down and he leaned into it like "pick me up!"

The big issue I'm having now is that he thinks he can still perch. He keeps trying to fly up onto things. I try to place him things that are high but not high enough that if he fell off he would get hurt.
