Need help with over friendly neighbors asap!!!!!

Hi neighbor how are you? I was thinking of your kindness in mowing that plot for me and I didn't want to hurt your feelings but I wanted to let it grow for awhile and see how it looks. I like my trees and we aren't going to cut them down any time soon but I appreciate your offering to do that for me and if I decide to cut them down I'll give you a call.
I appreciate your plowing my drive for me and I was wondering if I could pay you back by giving you eggs or a baked good?
It's so nice having neighbors that care, but I don't want to take advantage of you.
Thank you!
Bye neighbor.

I would want to know why he wants to cut down some of the trees. Are they diseased, damaged by storms and likely to fall if not cut down? A person experienced with trees can see more than someone who is not.

I understand the weed problem of overgrown fields too well.
If I had a neighbor who would come and mow for me, I would be thrilled. But I don't know your situation, and why you don't want the field mowed, except you said you liked the look. That look takes maintenance too, and that means mowing every so often.

I would ask him why he thinks these things need to be done, and then really think about it before telling him not to do it anymore.

Outstanding. Stiffen up your spine, and tell him how it is. You might be surprised about someones respect when you speak up. I would also figure out to say something about the bible school thing. Maybe like the part of the bible that says come as you are. Maybe mention, that you respect his beliefs, but that you dont think its fair to keep your child from learning about the bible because of his choice in hair styles. Make it like its not a big deal, and let him know that you respect his views on hair, but he needs to respect your decision to allow your kid to have long hair, and your kids choice to wear it. If it goes south, Im willing to bet, it wont be nasty. It might get quiet for a while, but it seems like that might be nice anyways! I hope youve already fixed this issue, and it does seem like a pretty simple one!!!! Kindness!

--- I've done exactly precisely that in the past. It was over a tree near the edge of the property being taken down -- it was half-fallen already, I kinda wanted to keep the fallen snag and remaining living part of it as windbreak for the horses for as long as i remained nonhazardous, and I certainly *didn't* want the neighbor slicing out a section of our shared fence (damaging the tensioning of the rest of it) in order to make giant tractor ruts all over my horse paddock while taking the tree apart! But he thought he was doing a favor since he was already out there taking down some of *his* trees. Actually I brought homemade jam not pie. But it worked well and turned out fine and he fixed the fence.

So, since you have not accurately guessed my own state of mind or motivations, here, I am compelled to think there is SOME possibility you might be mistaken as well about the motivations of ninny's neighbor, who you know even less about than you do about me

This is true. Regardless of wether you lived there or not. If he has taken care of that field for 2 yrs prior to you owning it then that also counts toward his years of possession. It is easy to get a right of ownership to that property. I would not let him mow it and I would be very firm about it if it was my property.

I don't think it's that easy. I've been mowing my elderly neighbor's lawn for years, but if tried to claim his home as mine I don't imagine a court would sympathize ...

It doesn't apply to lots with homes on them (I don't think...unless it was an abandoned home)... but if you have an extra lot or field and someone maintains it without your having hired them... after so long, they can lay claim to it. (maybe not in all states)

You're right. I could never guess or imagine your state of mind or motivation to compare your situation of one day's dealing with one dead tree being cut down off a fence line leaving tractor ruts in a horse paddock with Ninny's continual one of many live trees and a field's being cut on a regular basis without approval or permission, possibly putting the ownership of the land in jeopardy.

It does, next door neighbors built a fence a foot over on our boundary line we left it, they took adverse possession of that property.

Adverse possession is a principle of real estate law whereby somebody who possesses the land of another for an extended period of time may be able to claim legal title to that land. The exact elements of an adverse possession claim may be different in each state.

I say good fences make good neighbors... If there is any way you could put up a fence to separate your properties I would do it. That way he can't get the tractor in... and passerby would know that it wasn't his land... so he wouldn't be embarrassed by it's "sloppy" appearrance... Man, neighbors like that would drive me nuts... Good Luck!

(P.S. I didn't make it through the 5 pages of replies yet... so it a solution was already found just ignore me!
