Hello all! This is our first year raising chickens. We were born and raised in the city and recently moved our family to an acreage a few hours from the rest of our family so we are BRAND new to this and loving it! Wondering if anyone can give some insight. Our kiddos are wanting to get to giving them names! We were told the two black ones were “Asians blacks” which I’m realizing there isn’t much information on. What do you think as far as types of chickens as well as pullets or cockerels? All are around 6 weeks old now.

1 and 2 look like male barred rock to me. If they are, the males will have a lot more white to their coloring and the females will be more black. I’m unsure about 3-5 but the white chick in the background of 5 looks like a male white Leghorn or Cornish meat chicken. I got my first chicks 3/5/18 so I am brand new to this too! I’m from a city of 100,000 and married my husband who is a farmer 5 months ago. We live on a farm and the closest town has 500 people. Quite the change! Welcome to country life :)

To follow up, I believe I have 1 male barred rock and 3 female barred rock who are 5 weeks old. The male is starting to develop a crown. Males start developing crowns about 5-6 weeks for barred rocks. Females will not develop crowns until they are close to laying eggs. In my picture attached, what I believe The male to be is circled in blue. Notice how he has a lot more white to his coloring? The female is circled in red. She is more black/darker colored overall. This is due to the males having two barring genes and the females only having one.

I thought barred rock too but then saw some posts that said black sex link cockerels were very similar in look. We have 4 of the white ones and bought them labeled as leghorns so hoping that’s what they are haha! We moved from a city of 450,000 to right in between a town of 1000 and a town of 300 so it’s a huge change for us. Thank you for your help!!

Absolutely, happy to help. I have female black sexlinks who are all black. It is very possible that you have black male sexlinks. They could look like a barred rock because their mom was most likely a barred rock. I think watching their comb development would be the easiest way to tell if you have males or females. When you first got them, did they have a white dot on their head? That would indicate a male black sexlink.

1 and 2 seem like barred rocks, and I think cockerels. 3 looks like an Easter Egger pullet, and four looks like a Rhode Island Red, unsure of gender. 5 baffles me.

Barred rocks also have dots on their heads.
