Neighbor Dogs....again....UPDATE AT END OF THREAD!

My entire yard is fenced with chainlink so no animal can get out or get in, so maybe this is something to think about, it shouldn't have to be the owner of the chickens job to do that BUT when my kid was small that's what I did so that I felt he was safe, now it keeps my dogs in and others out, sometimes we have to take care of it ourselves......if that dog gets taken care of then someone elses may come along

Actually, it is. It is our own responsibility to keep our children and other animals safe. Whatever that means - putting up a fence, animal control, SSS, catch and take to shelter - pick one. If you put up a fence, it will keep this particular dog out, and any other strays that may come along. If you shoot the dog, make it a good clean shot if you can. Nothing cruel there. Dog won't know a thing. If you take it to a shelter, tell them how it has been acting at your place. I don't know anything about animal control. We don't have that option here. We're out in the country, and we take care of our own problems.

Actually what I should have said is it shouldn't be at the expense of the chicken owner to put a fence up to keep someone else dog out BUT if you are going to have animals, kids then YES it is your responsibilty to keep them safe. I can't imagine not having my yard fenced in esp when my son was little and now it keeps all my pets safe, whether it be from dogs or wildlife, luckilly I don't have strangers dogs around much unless one gets loose by accident.

ITA with you about it "shouldn't" be our responsibility to keep stupid dogs out of our yard. I was venting about this the other day. WTH do I have to pay for a fence that I can barely afford. My chickens stay in the yard it's the dog that comes in it. Those people should be fencing their dog in, but here I am investing in a fence to protect my chickens because no one will care about them except me.

I just love fences, the bigger the better.

For those who think that using poison to eliminate animals is horrible - I just want to remind you that our Game Commission used poison to eliminate raccoons and foxes in our area when there was an outbreak of rabies - if they used it it can't be considered to be that cruel - poison is and was used in our western states to elininate coyotes - if you say that it is a horrible way to die - I say - how do you know - you ever try it - if you want to eliminate a dog that is killing your chickens - yes - you can take it to the Animal Control Center but 9 out of 10 times it will be put to sleep after being stressed for a week or so - is dying while be gassed a better way to die - I don't know - it all depends on how bad you want to eliminate animal as to what method you use - no one likes to kill an animal - but sometimes it is necessary - I often watched when a vet put an animan to sleep and thought - boy what an easy way to die - instead of getting all kinds of operations and then dying of cancer anyway - sometimes I watch the discovery channel wild show where they show lions or wolfs eating an animal while it is still alive - ouch

My dog ate rat poison...twice. Our vet explained they show no symptoms for up to two weeks. They slowly bleed internally until it eventually kills them. So yes, it is a horrible way to die. Just because the government or fish and wildlife does it does not make it any less cruel.

Amen, like the government doing it makes it less horrible somehow?? Necessary maybe but still awful. The government isn't exactly the poster child you want to use Joepa for doing what is "right" or not cruel.

For your information I have worked in an animal emergency clinic and have seen many pets come in poisoned and having drank antifreeze and both ARE horrible deaths, poison makes them bleed out and they die a miserable death and antifreeze kills their kidneys and insides and they suffer terribly....SO No Ive never tried it myself but from the looks of it I wouldn't want to die that way....perhaps you would like to give it a try and get back to us on that ??? Not to mention any time you try and poison an animal in this way it doesn't mean you will only poison that particular animal, you risk killing an innocent passerby.

Thanks for this comment. It gives a little perspective from the real world instead of the fantasy world some of these people are living in.

How is this a fantasy world? I would think it's pretty much fact that a slow, painful death is cruel compared to a very quick one.
