I would get a rooster just to spite her, but I am one who when ASKED nicely, will do what I can to accommodate people if possible, but when TOLD to do something, well lets just say I have a bit of a rebellious streak! Out here in the country, they SSS (shoot, shovel and shut up) but I wouldn't do it unless another way couldn't be worked out. I have some expensive horses and if a dog were attacking them, I'd sure shoot it. You can always shoot it with a paint ball gun. Then the dog would go home alive, and with a mark to show your seriousness about protecting your property. JMHO. I am not one to start trouble, but sure won't back down from it either.
Had a neighbor's son, who was also their attorney come to the house once. The father had died and they were concerned that my having 14 horses at the time, right there beside their property would decrease the salability of their home and property. Unfortunately hubby was the one that was home, and he informed them that we were very knowledgeable about the covenants on our land, which state we can have one horse per are. Me, I'd have told him that I'd run right out and buy 2 more since I was 2 below my limit! Some people are just jerks.
BTW, we have a rooster and he never wakes me up and he crows early in the am, pm, or just whenever.
