Neighbor's dog

Next time DO NOT call his "owner". Instead call your local animal shelter (preferably a no-kill one). This dog deserves a much better life then this. I will never understand how some people can treat such innocent animals like this. The animal doesnt know any better.

I would have gave this guy a piece of my mind.

Oh no definitely not calling them again, ever. And if dog shows up here again (I have not seen him at all since - not running around by their house, not out in the field, nowhere - but their house is nearly 1/4 mi down the road), I'm sure i can take him someplace where he will find a better home. They have a great no-kill shelter in town and my vet also has some connections. She even keeps some until they can be placed in 'special situations'.

And yeah, the neighbors are older people now, but they raised eight kids and they have I forget how many grandkids and a couple of greats now and it does make you wonder what life in their house was like. Feel so badly I didn't do more at the time, but I had literally had some surgery that day and was swathed in bandages and not moving very fast and was just sitting outside in a chair when he pulled up.

One thing. If you take him to a shelter make sure it's one far away, cause they could look there and take him back. If he comes, which I'm hoping he does. :]

I would not just take this dog or rehome it, this could lead to threats and legal proceedings. And I hope the reason the dog hasn't turned up again is not because he's injured from his beating.

Talk to this guy and ask if you can have the dog. After all, if it's causing him problems by running away he might want rid. Or you could offer to train it if you think you're able to.

Just so you know, you can report this. Rural areas may not take action, at least that is how it was in areas I've lived in, but there are groups that operate on a national level. Bestfriends (animal welfare, not AR) probably has at least information on this subject, and can probably either give you solid information on how to prevent this in the future, or can put you in touch with someone who can. Often, you will have to get video evidence to back you up, but not always. Unfortunately, reporting can have the effect of either the abuse just moving underground, or threats against yourself. Regardless, if the dog was on your property, then I assume I have the right to tell him to get back in his truck with his stick, and to leave the property immediately. I always first try to educate (man with stick=dog who is scared of man and stick, not dog who will not run away), but if that does not work, I then expand to other options. Thankfully, I haven't actually seen this sort of outward abuse of an animal yet in person, but have seen the after-effects when adopting abused animals or working with abused kids.

You should go over to their house and ask if you could take the dog off their hands but make sure that you word it so they think you are doing them a favor and it would be better for them not to have it.
