Neighbors dogs in coop. UPDATE! 2nd time. 911/charges/court today

This is an issue about irresponsibility and those who find safety and comfort in blaming others for the responsibility they will not take. Oh nice people at BYC, let's not go down the church and salvation road here. God has nothing to do with choices people make to be idiots. Some of the most gawd-awful vicious and despicable people I have known in my life were church-going, Bible- thumpin believers who I'm sure will be completely surprised when they meet the devil eye-to-eye in foreverland.

If it were me, I would go to my neighbor with my shotgun in hand. Show the gun to him and let him understand that the next time you see his dog in your yard it is your intention to use it on the dog. Also let him know that if he ever sees one of your birds in his yard, he can feel free to do the same.

I'll bet you 2 cents to a doughnut that he will shut the heck up and keep his dogs contained.....IF he cares about them. In the meantime, it will behoove you to document every single activity big or small, add all the photos you can and gear up to sue his a$$ in small claims court.

I can just about GUARANTEE this is NOT a good idea.
ETA regardless of your intentions, if you show up on your neighbor's doorstep with gun in hand, he and any member of his family can press charges against you for harassment or intimidation, and depending upon your state's laws, possibly even assault although you may not even touch him or any member of his family. Leave your gun at home. Better yet, stay home WITH your gun and only use it as a last resort if his dog shows up on your property again. If you stay within your rights, you won't have to worry about poor judgment and rash decisions coming back to bite you on the behind later... I hope you get your situation resolved soon.

A friend of mine who has birds taught me about the three s's before I got my birds. Shoot....Shovel....and Shut up! Here in Michigan the chasing and or killing of livestock is not permitted. You're supposed to file a complaint with the sheriff first. I just hope I never have to deal with it. Although after we bought our property a dog hoarder moved in next door. I try not to bother her in hopes that she will leave my animals alone.

I'm so sorry for your terrible loss. I hope you get things worked out.

For the sake of the dogs, call animal control to have a "welfare check" on them if they aren't being taken care of properly!!!!!
Animal hoarders are disgusting, but really they just need some kind of mental help.

Please don't let her animals suffer for the sake of keeping peace with her. I think you can remain anonymous if you just ask for a welfare check.

so so sorry, i finaly broke my dog from running, i hated my dog running! made me feel like an irresponsible jerk, i went round and round with her, she is a nice dog, great with all critters but still! the hot wire fence is what broke her, thankfully. had my dog gone on a rampage i sure wouldnt have blamed the victim! and i would have been surprised to get my dog back in one piece. one trick you could try for the next batch of running dogs BEFORE they kill (its too late for your current killer dogs) is to catch them and rub poop all over them, yes poop! dogs love to roll in yucky stuff so you wont be suspected, the dogs will think they smell awsome and if the owners are anything like me they wont enjoy washing poopy dogs! really do try it, its an effective, harmless deterrent, once again so sorry

My chickens got out one day, but they stayed on my property. Unfortunately, so did the neighbor's dog. I caught him just finishing up one of my hens. When I let the neighbors know what happened, at first the husband was kinda mad that I even called them. He said that my dogs bark when they come home (we share a driveway). So I guess that barking dogs and chicken killing dogs are the same thing. I told him that if the chicken had been out in the road or on his property then it was my problem, but this was his problem as his dog was in our yard. I had talked them previoulsy about their dogs being in our yard and the way they stare at our goats. That was before chickens.

Well, the next morning they brought me a card, $20, an apology, and a bb gun. They told me to shoot their dogs if they are ever in our yard again. I told them that I probably wouldn't do that, but they insisted that I keep the gun and they are building a fence. So far they have been good to their word.

Accidents do happen, and it is nice when neighbors behave in a neighborly manor.

Sorry about all the trouble your neighbor is causing you. I guess they are like family...you can't pick them, at least not easily.

I recommend you do shoot the dog with a BB gun. It will hurt the dog, without a serious injury and the dog will associate catching/killing a chicken with pain. Having your neighbors permission is a plus. Personally I do have a BB gun by my door. I would use it regardless of permission or not. Dogs can be trained. And therefore, can understand where they are not welcomed. Your neighbor is getting a fence.....I recommend you get a better one.

K8tie what in the world are you talking about?

Do not under any reason follow this persons advice about the shotgun. You show up with one you can be charged with threatening them.
Go through small claims court.
