No, just the way you worded your first post here about getting chickens in the fall. It sounded like you were planning on getting your first chickens!I do have chickens. I have five right now. I have two black stars, an ameracauna, and two orpingtons. I just got rid of three hens that were given to us because they we picking on them, so the others weren't laying eggs. The first chicks I got were two years ago. I have had many chickens between then and now. Do I sound inexperienced?![]()
Hey there! I'm a soon-to-be chicken owner here in Reno! Just waiting on my coop and chickens. I have 3 blue lace red wyonedette's coming via a friends order. I'm also looking for a couple rhode island reds. Is there anyone in the Reno area (or relatively close) that has some chicks available mid-July? I would like 2.
Thanks so much! What a great forum!

My cochins are probably the most shy of these chicks but don't seem to be dumb. I have a broody BO right now. Trying to break her but she's staying firm right now. Caught another BO eating an egg.Welcome! I have one BLRW who is 13 weeks old. She's really sweet. As far as chicks... I just put 6 of Sunny's marans eggs under my broody, but it's more of an experiment than anything. She's a first-time broody, and the first two days she switched nests a few times and I kept tucking the eggs under her. Now she's staying on them, but I'm not expecting a hatch.
And broodiness must be contagious Now Sour, one of my BA, is broody! I don't need 2 of 9 laying hens to be broody. Maybe tomorrow I'll put her in the baby pen, since the babies are now integrated with the rest of the flock. There's no nesting area there.
Everyone is getting integrated now. I put my remaining 3 from Candy's hatch in the yard today. They're sticking together, but are acting just fine around the dogs. When I put them out, a few of the babies started picking on them. Karma sux! We laughed... a few weeks ago, we tried to put the 9 babies in with these 3, and it got too brutal to continue. In fact, the lavender pullet is now named Jerk (you know, Jamaican jerk chicken) because she was the meanest. Now she's the one who's sticking to the corners and not integrating as well, because she keeps getting put in her place.
Last night, all but one of the babies went into the coop at night, except for General Tso. Elizabeth, are your cochins this dumb? She's a total sweetheart, but NOT the smartest one in the flock, by FAR!
Lately, I've been looking at my flock and thinking I want to add an EE or two. But I don't want the standard yellow/brown color that everyone seems to get. There's no rush... I have 21 chickens and 4 ducks right now. I told Russ that, if I get chicks next year, I'm going for a few EEs, a marans or two, maybe another welsummer. He says he wants to get more faverolles when these 3 get too old. He likes them the most. In fact, Barbeque was the first to accept the babies into the flock, and now she's roosting with them.
