Nevadans?

So uh... you know how some women might buy an expensive outfit and hide it in their closet for a month or so, then pull it out and say they've had it awhile but the husband just hasn't noticed?
Um... do you think I can get away with that when the hatching eggs start hatching? He won't be mad at me for ordering them, but there will be a lot of eye-rolling and teasing going on.

Well Missy, it's like this. Some people just don't understand us chicken people so I guess in a way we do deserve the eye rolling thingy but don't forget he does have snakes. Now what's cuter, chickens or snakes. I like snakes but I loooooove chickens.

Uh... hold them upside down and drip food coloring into their uh... yeah. And make sure it's not red? That's just me guessing, before I actually look it up and know what I'm talking about.

Exactly right.

I doubt it will work on dark eggs though. When I did it, I used blue on one, green on another, and red on another one (she had plenty of fluff to hide it). My birds lay white eggs and most of the time, they barely made a mark on the eggs. I had to do the food coloring every morning as it didn't last. Don't freak out when the first poop is a strange color!

The dangers of broodies and incubators . . LOTS of chicks . . plus LOADS of cuteness and satisfaction

Speaking of which . . . I have chicks hatching today

2 bantam buff laced Polish, and 1 blue wheaten Ameraucana have hatched so far. Another BLP, BW and two bantam Belgian Porcelain d'Anver eggs have pipped. 2 more W/BW and 2 d'Anvers to go. 9 bantam buff laced Brahma eggs go into lockdown today and 3 bantam BLRW eggs are due to hatch in 2 weeks. And I am thinking about buying eggs to put under my now 4 broodies! I have never had so many broodies at one time before!!

Yep, my experience exactly with trying this. I ended up separating the hens I wanted eggs from during the day and putting them back with the flock at night.

That depends on many factors. How healthy the parent birds are, shell quality, how well they are packaged, how warm they get (makes them sweat and bacteria enters the egg killing the embryo) and how rough the postal service treats them

I always let the eggs sit without turning them (helps the air cells that might have been ruptured from shaking during shipping settle back into place) for at least 12 hours (if I candle them and see really bad air cells ~bubbles floating in them~ I let them sit 24 hours) tented with some water in a container to help keep them from drying out (the older the egg the more moisture they loose) and from there I would put them under your broody. I have had from 1 to 100% hatch on shipped eggs. When they are poorly packaged or too old is when I have had the worst hatches. The d'Anver eggs were obviously too old and only 4 of the 9 eggs made it to lockdown, where as the bantam buff Brahma eggs shipped from two different sellers, I got great results with 10 out of 11 hatching in the first batch and now 9 of 12 second batch going into lockdown today. But these results were in a good incubator and not under a broody hen.

I will post pictures of the babies when they have all hatched and are fluffed up and cute

The Belgian d'Anvers should be real tiny and have lavender colored down. I ESPECIALLY want these guys to hatch since I have been wanting some for a long time. The Porcelain color is gorgeous!
Pictures please!!! Candy, what kind of luck have you had with hatching eggs that arrive in the mail? I expect a few not to hatch, just because of travel and handling.

Hi everybody I'm new to this area and the board. Glad to see so many yardbird lovers in the Reno area. When I'm not on my phone I'll post pictures of the growing flock. One juvenile hybrid polish roo named Hendrix, 3 pro. Red pullets, 3 Cali white pullets, and a black orp/RIR pullet. The pullets are still a couple weeks away from the coop though
