Nevadans?

Missy, picco is doing great. I think he likes his new flock!

So all my chicks are growing extremely fast except one. A BLRW who is very small. I'm little worried about her. She eats and drinks (and poop appears) fine, but I've moved her to her own box. The others seemed to be stepping on her, not really picking on her but clearly she was in their way. She seems to want to sleep a lot. Do you or anyone know if this is normal (slow growth and sleepy?). I did put one other smaller chick (one hatched close to same day) with her so she would not be lonely.
Any input is appreciated!
Thanks!

What are you feeding them? Wyandottes seem especially susceptible to thiamine (B12) deficiency from medicated chick starter. First thing I do when a chick seems weak is put vitamins (I like GQF vitamins plus that you can purchase at the feed store or Polyvisol baby vitamins without iron purchased at the drug store) in their water along with a tablespoon of organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar. I also give finely ground whole grain cereal to my chicks because it is high in the B vitamins. I do not feed medicated chick starter since it blocks their systems from absorbing thiamine. I use either Purina Flockraiser or an organic chick starter. Another thing to look for is if she is a shavings eater. I have had this happen many times, in fact I just had one of my bantam buff Brahma chicks start going downhill and acting very lethargic and I suspected she was eating shaving so I watched her and when the other chicks were eating she was wandering around picking at the shavings and eating them

I had to take all of the shavings out and use clean play sand instead. After I did that and put the vitamins and vinegar in their water she got all better.

I hope this helps

ooookay! Three eggies left and theyre due on sunday <3 One has a broken airsac but is still developing, does it even stand a chance? Also what should I do with my mama who is already in the broody pen? She is crazy protective and I wont trust her around the other two broodys when theyre eggs are about to hatch. her chick will be three weeks....should I just make them a seperate pen or something?

Missy youre hecka brave to rehome your marans so young! Everyone thought mine was a boy right up until the day she layed an egg, haha

Well, I lost my little handicapped girl today. I never expected her to live this long (1 1/2 years) and I feel so bad because she had gotten down to the step down portion of the coop and couldn't get back up so couldn't get to the food and water. I've been working (even though I haven't been released to go back to work) because I had to fire an employee so my husband was taking care of the chickens and he didn't notice she wasn't in her regular spot. Poor sweet girl. She was a trooper and taught me a lot about the will to live. RIP Sweet Girl.

Been so quiet around here. Sunny, hope you find better reception or you need to move!

Sunny, on the chicks you hatched from my eggs, did you have any white legged chickens? I got two from this last batch. I have a white roo with white legs. I was wondering what it means genetically, if anything.
Im sorry Pam, that just stinks :(

I've gotten that boy vibe from him for awhile. The way he stands, walks... how big his comb is already. And if he is a she, then As shad will have some gorgeous eggs!

Plus, I needed the mini-coop available for my two new blue andalusians! They're WAAAYYY too little to go with any of the other chickens. I'll post pics maybe tomorrow.

Are you talking about Gregory Peck?

Good luck on your hatch! I would definitely make them a separate pen

My babies started kindergarten today! can't believe how fast the time has flown by. My husband finished his first 3 days of work (12 hr shifts) and is quite tired but it has gone well.

missy, I have not made vinegar so I'm not sure what to tell you. Hopefully someone will have some experience to share with you.

Nah I have a black copper marans that i hatched from sunnys eggs a year and a half ago. This thing SCREAMED rooster from the very beginning. Oh man, it was attitudy, walked tall, had a HUGE comb at five weeks, and fooled everyone. Now she is a realiable and bossy head hen hahaa

Missy i cant wait to see the new birds! How pretty andilusians are!

Elizabeth awww, your babies are ALL GROWN UP! next thing you know they will be driving off to college...

Has anyone on here ever made vinegar? Intentionally? I've decided that, since I have more than enough jelly this year, I want to turn my grapes into vinegar. I'm Googling all over the place, but everything is telling me to either use a storebought wine, or to just soak the fruit in water then set it in my cupboard (sounds cheap and liable to go bad), or buy expensive brewing equipment. I'm not looking to make a good wine, since we don't drink in the first place, but how to make the vinegar end product.

I don't know about grapes but to make apple cider vinegar I have to put unpasteurized apple juice in a glass jar and cover it with a fine cloth that will allow the vinegar to breathe and keep it in a dark cupboard for ages and ages. I did a head start and added some ACV that already had the "mother" in it. Shortened to ferment time to a couple of weeks instead of a couple of months. I imagine grapes would be similar but I'm not sure.

Yay, great to see some action on here.

Missy, sounds like you'll get more then one chick this go around and yes, I'd move the mom and her chick away from the new ones. At least until the new ones are settled with mom and then introduce everyone.

I'm getting pretty good at this broody game and I have two more at it right now! One is the broody who stoled all the chicks from the other mom (but she did let her co-parent). I am surprised she went for another.

The BIG surprise is that one of the Polish hens has gone broody and takes it very serious! She's like in a trance.

I knew the Polish had started a few days ago and when I asked my husband about her he kept referring to the black hen, but the Polish is Silver laced so after some discussion I tell I'm talking about in the barn. I told him I ran those girls off everyday and they were just laying and I pick up the eggs....so to clarify, wrong color hen and in the opposite side of the stall! And this girl is on a load of eggs! Actually so is the Polish, the other are continuing to lay in with her which explains the noisy morning.

I'm going to move the box a couple of feet over and set up a portion of the coop for her and the chicks.

I was wishing I would have caught the other chicken sooner, I would have stuck Polish eggs along with the EE's under her.

The last 10 are about 2 months, so we'll be adding another 10-16. I think they'll hatch more not being next to each other. No stealing chicks and abandoning the nest.

So if anyone's interested in possible show quality Polish and some beautiful EE's I'll have some in a few weeks!
