24 eggs today!

I went in the coop and there were about 5 eggs scattered throughout the coop. maybe someone pushed them out of the rogue nest? anyway I guess I can't fault them considering the good production level. One was cracked and eaten in the nest box. I suspect the broody of that.

Poor Soren was sick today. Some kind of stomach bug. he'll have to stay home from school tomorrow. Hopefully we've seen the worst.

OH MY GOSH! I got a picture to load! AT HOME! Now if I can get it to submit...

I was trying to load it and it was taking forever so I took a nap then woke up and was doing some other stuff for a couple of hours then came back in and saw the computer was asleep and the modem was too but when I got them back up I found this picture had loaded! YEA!!!

I was trying to load this pic from way back when we were talking about how Candy's babies were laying and that I needed to post a pic of her and Pam's birds and eggs. Now the pic is outdated cause I have a really dark green egg layer out there too. I'm confused about where this one came from though. Kim thought she had given me an OE but when those girls started laying quite awhile ago they were all brown.

This egg could be one of Pam's, from her EE roo and her RIR girl but the egg is so dark! A true OE which should have taken 2 generations to produce and should have required a marans of some type along the way. So Missy it looks like I may have an OE for you after all! We've just got to figure out who is laying this dark olive green egg. It's really gorgeous!

gorgeous eggs, sunny! I love my CGMarans eggs but only one darker layer and a few terracotta from the welsummers is not enough dark for me. I'll have to get some BCMs at some point.

Ron, you took them straight from your garden and pickled them the same day. I think they'll be just fine with the skins on. If you had purchased them from the store, it would be a totally different story. I don't peel my garden carrots or potatoes, either.

I grew Purple Viking this year, too. I got a couple of seed potatoes from Sunny, and planted them in feed sacks in April. They did great! And got rather large for being in feed sacks. These I harvested last night were Purple Majesty, which is deep purple all the way through. Of all that I bought, this one was the only one that isn't supposed to be good for long-term storage. Which is fine... we'll eat them up too fast! I didn't do any russets, but I did Yukon Gold and Yellow Finn. The area where I planted the Finns just isn't the best area anyway, and will probably need more soil amendments before it can be, so I don't think I can accurately judge that variety when I harvest it. I do have a couple of seeds in Garden #1, though, which is super good soil.
Thanks Missy - the skins seemed really soft so I don't see them being a problem.

The potatoes that are purple all the way through look interesting - what do they taste like? What is the consisency of the flesh?

24 eggs! Very nice - that must be near full capacity eh? They're good looking ones, too!

so missy if i planted my fall garden in 1-2 weeks what could i grow???

Spinach, lettuce, swiss chard, snow peas are your best bets. They can all withstand a light frost, and will mature within 60 days. But you want to get on it as soon as possible, since the seedlings need a good head start before the plants have to worry about frost. You can always cover the plants at night, and that will help you extend the season.

It's a pretty solid consistency, not that great for baking. More of the waxy kind, like a red potato. This morning we had them sauteed up with onions. My favorite way to eat them is in something called crash hot potatoes... you take new potatoes and boil them whole until they're fork-tender. Then drizzle a baking sheet with olive oil. Set the potatoes on the sheet and "smash" them once or twice... not to smithereens, just enough to expose the inside to the air and leave the spud whole. Then drizzle with more olive oil, maybe some rosemary and salt. Bake at 450 degrees until crispy. The kids love them. And boiling the new potatoes whole before crashing them retains all of the color! So you can have them in white, red, yellow, and purple. The kids love them.

Ron, are you coming into Reno any time in the next few weeks? I can save some for you to try. We still have at least 6 plants of them to harvest.

Today was so nice to have no clients, nobody to run to school, and a few helping hands. I tired the kids out with work, but we got nearly caught up on the food storage! We did pear butter, pear jam, pear cranberry cinnamon jam, grape pepper compote... pears, tomatoes, and grapes in the dehydrator... pineapple-rum frozen yogurt (that took 48 hours, start to finish.) Got the spinach and radishes planted, and some tomatoes and eggplant in the freezer.

And of course today, after getting excited that I was almost caught up, I realized that the concord grapes are almost all ripe. I guess I'll pick the ripe ones tomorrow and cook them down into grape juice while the kids are in school.

Sheryl, will you be able to pick grapes on Wednesday?

ETA: That egg picture is awesome Sunny! BTW it sounds like you might be feeling better eh?

I am feeling better, thank you! The ear itself still hurts when my meds wear off but I no longer want to curl into a ball and cry. lol The outside swelling is way down. I looked like two different people from one side to the other for awhile there. I also noticed I didn't wince with pain when washing my neck tonight so the glands are well on their way to being infection free as well. :)
It's a $25 version from Walmart, where you put the ice and salt on the sides. I've only used it a few times.
I was looking at those. Really good price for an ice cream maker.
My daughter is itching for some "Nancy's Quiche" but it's very pricey! We have eggs coming out our ears. Does anyone have a yummy quiche recipe they wouldn't mind sharing?
Never heard of Nancy's quiche. I make a crustless quiche that we love but it is different every time cause I throw in whatever we have available. I'm not a big fan of crust so I really love the crustless.

Great pics! Congrats on all the eggs. Yes the dark eggs are sooo cool looking. Course you all know how I feel about the taste. I should have some nice super dark egg layers in a couple of generations.

Tried to post pics of the puppies again but it is not seeing me at all. Pooh! They are gonna be grown before I get pics posted. They are getting so darn cute now! They all have their eyes open and are play fighting in that little puppie way, kinda in slow motion and still a little wobbly on their legs but so freakin cute!!!!!
