Hi, I'm glad to find another chicken lover close to me tooHello,
I'm from Lamoille. Idon't know of any breeders in Elko area but it nice to see a post from someone up in Northeastern Nevada.
I have been looking around...found some on Ebay but I am a little skeptical....have you bought any fertilized eggs from Ebay or have any suggestions on finding a reputable breeder? My husband wants the biggest JG possible, he even laughed when I said all the hatcheries that would let you mix and match chick breeds and order minimal chicks were sold out of JG and I could only find hatcharies that require 15-25 min order per breed...he said lets do it, could you imagine 15 -13lb chickens running at you looking for treats...hahahaha...as funny as that sounds I think I would go broke trying to feed that many JG plus all my other chickiesTheirs not to many breeders in elko, you would be better off finding someone with Jersey Giants and buy fertilized eggs from them. Sadly I dont have Jersies
One thing I started looking into and trying a little the last couple years is growing my own chicken feed....like sunflowers, wheat, winter squash I mostly free range all summer and supplment some too-and of course all the left over goodies, but one day I would like to be able to feed them 100% off what I can grown and process myself. I I have been researching it and seeing what kind of feed I could grow in the summer and store to feed in the winter. I haven't really researched the Modesto Milling Products but I will have to look into it.I would like to get modesto milling products to elko in kind of a co-op but the interest level up here is not that good.
Ooooh Great Idea~Thank you I will have to check into that!If you check a feed store and add Jersey Giant chicks to the order they are sending in, the one I have used only required that I order five chicks. A lot better than 15 even! The sent six and I bought all of them.
I really think I would like to try this, I seen a couple saying they had blue JG...it would be kind of fun to get a variety even if most hatched out black...just one blue would be pretty interesting. I am going to go and see what I can find and read up on some of the feed back. Thank you so much for the advice...lol I will most likely be on ebay for the rest of the night. HahahaOn eBay always look at the seller's feedback forum section..... You can see it they pack eggs well and often times the hatch rates if/when people follow up. Just click the number next to the seller's name (and sometimes there's a colored star depending on what their volume is buying/selling)
I ordered 25 from Mcmurry and got 27. Between losing the roosters to soup and others around here losing chickens to racoons I have ten young girls left. I'm getting protective now my wife gave away three the other day. The guilt trip was good enough that when I build another coupe I may be able to get some blue and black copper marans.Hi, I'm glad to find another chicken lover close to me tooI was actually in the Elko Cal Ranch on the 6th this month and couldn't resist picking up a couple new additions....they didn't have a huge selection but I couldn't help myself. If you ever need anything from SLC I'd be happy to help you out I go in about once a month or so. I am thinking I am going to have to buy some fertilized eggs and hatch them out myself....all the hatcheries are either sold out or require 15-25 chicks...don't think I could afford to feed 15-25 JG
Although I may end up ordering them and trying to sell my extras on KSL or something..still debating.

I wish I had more time. I have too many other animals to focus that amount of time to my girls. That being said I still want to feed them the good stuff. One thing I started looking into and trying a little the last couple years is growing my own chicken feed....like sunflowers, wheat, winter squash I mostly free range all summer and supplment some too-and of course all the left over goodies, but one day I would like to be able to feed them 100% off what I can grown and process myself. Did you get an asst. breed of chicks? If so what breeds did you get? This weekend I bought four Marans...two FBCM and two blue/splash Marans....so excited to see how they turn out! When u are ready for some let me know, if mine are old enought I am happy to share the wealth but if not I have some pretty good hook ups to get you started!!!I ordered 25 from Mcmurry and got 27.
